MCHS advance to semis at Copa Acadiana tourney

I would have to say we had more but couldn’t connect. It was a great show by the boys, and this will only help them.

The Morgan City Tigers’ soccer team fell in the semifinals of the Copa Acadiana’s Gold Division.
The Tigers finished the weekend 2-1-1 with wins against Opelousas Catholic (3-0) and DeRidder (2-1), a 1-1 tie against Metairie Park Country Day and a 3-2 defeat in the semifinals to Westminster Christian.
Morgan City coach Trevor Patterson said his squad “really stepped up their play this weekend.”
The tournament, he said, featured some of the state’s top teams in boys’ and girls’ action.
Against Opelousas Catholic, Irving Delgado scored two goals and Sergize Flores added another.
Against Country Day, ranked No. 11 in Division 3, the Cajuns scored first before the Tigers tied it in the second half with a goal by Flores.
Patterson said his squad had multiple chances and attempts at more goals.
Against DeRidder, Morgan City would jump out to a 2-0 lead with goals by Flores and Daniel Alvarado.
DeRidder netted a goal in the loss.
In the Tigers’ match against Westminster, ranked No. 8 in Division 3, Patterson said the game was a “fight tooth and nail.”
While Morgan City scored a goal in the first five minutes with a shot from Flores, Westminster tied the game and later took a 2-1 lead.
Soon after, Alvarado tied the game before Westminster scored the game-winning goal with less than 10 minutes remaining in the contest.
“We both had some great chances,” Patterson said. “I would have to say we had more but couldn’t connect. It was a great show by the boys, and this will only help them.”
Westminster went on to win the Gold Division with a 3-0 victory against Lutcher.
Lady Tigers finish 1-2
The Morgan City Lady Tigers finished 1-2 at the Copa Cup this weekend.
The Lady Tigers fell to St. Louis, 3-0, and to Loyola, 6-0, but defeated Catholic-Pointe Coupee 2-1. Celeste Williams scored both goals.
Both the Tigers (4-3-2) and Lady Tigers (6-7) will travel to take on Beau Chene Tuesday with the girls playing at 5 p.m. and the boys at 7 p.m.
Beau Chene’s boy’s squad is ranked No. 1 in Division 2 and was last year’s Division 2 state runner-up.
