Morgan City and Assumption split their District 7-4A contests, with Assumption taking the final matchup between the two teams for the district championship.
Today at 5 p.m. in Morgan City, Morgan City has a chance to redeem itself when the two teams meet in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.
Although Assumption won the district title, Morgan City is seeded much higher. Morgan City (14-6) enters the contest as the No. 13 seed, while Assumption (14-10) is the No. 20 seed.
The two regular season matchups were different as Morgan City run-ruled Assumption, 10-0, in six innings in the first game March 22. In the second matchup, Assumption beat Morgan City, 5-3, on a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs when Assumption pitcher Emily Blanchard deposited a pitch over the centerfield wall.
While Assumption committed seven errors in the first game, both teams had problems with fielding miscues in game two as Assumption committed six errors and Morgan City had five.
After losing a five-member senior class that added tremendous power, Morgan City has rebounded this year with a young group of players who have kept the offensive production going. They have replaced such seniors as Brandi Ingram, who now is at Grambling State, and Celest Williams, who has moved on to Southern University.
On the mound, four-year starter Tyler Hebert has moved on to college, but the pitching duties have remained in the family as sister, sophomore Kennedy Hebert, has taken over and has been solid both on the mound and at the plate.
The Lady Tigers nearly have equaled last year’s win total of 16, too, and finished as District 7-4A runner-up with an 8-2 record.
Morgan City has won nine of its last 11 games, including a five-game winning streak that was snapped with the loss to Assumption. Morgan City bounced back in a big way, though, ending the regular season with a 14-0 victory against Thibodaux in five innings.
Meanwhile, Assumption enters today’s game with a 14-10 overall record and a 9-1 mark in district. Assumption has won 10 of its last 14 games, including a six-game winning streak that was snapped in its regular season finale with a 9-8 loss to Central Lafourche.
