MCHS, Berwick team again to raise money for cancer patients
Volleyball teams from Morgan City and Berwick High schools again teamed up to fight breast cancer as they met in Morgan City’s annual Paint the Pit Pink Game Thursday.
Prior to the game — a key District 8-V contest won by Berwick — the teams gathered with Debbie Acosta of Oncologics to present her a check for $11,000.
The schools had participated in fundraisers to raise money that will be donated to Louisiana Foundation for Cancer Care/Oncologics/Miles Perret Cancer Services. The money will stay in St. Mary Parish to help those battling cancer.
Through her work with the annual game, Morgan City volleyball Coach Christy Theriot and her teams have raised more than $100,000 through the years.
“The kids were inspired,” she said of this year’s event. “They love the Pink Game. … It’s fun. I love to see the community come together for a purpose.”
Berwick High School volleyball coach Heather Templet said it was nice to see the community unite for this cause.
“We’re going to keep coming back, and we’re going to keep having this game as a community,” Templet said.
Prior to the varsity contest, Morgan City High School’s Katelyn Gautreaux joined her grandmother, Dora Braud of Thibodaux, on the court as well as another of Braud’s grandchildren, Lena Braud, also of Thibodaux. Dora Braud participated in the traditional honorary serve before the varsity contest. Gautreaux said her grandmother is a breast cancer survivor.
