MCHS girls win, CCHS boys fall at tournament

Morgan City High School won the Division 2 championship at Centerville High School’s Tournament of the Teche with a 42-24 victory against Centerville Saturday.
Both teams were knotted at 7 at the conclusion of the first quarter, while Morgan City took a 20-14 advantage at the half.
Morgan City extended its lead to 26-17 after three quarters before outscoring Centerville 16-7 in the fourth quarter for the final margin.
Alisha Singleton led Morgan City with 12 points, while Laqwaisha Bourgeois also reached double figures with 10.
Other scorers for Morgan City were Meya Morse with nine; Samyra Toups and Nakerial Bourgeois, four each; Elicia Dorsey, two; and Steveyion Walker with a point.
Morgan City advanced to the finals after defeating Central Catholic Friday, 42-19.
While Morgan City took an 8-7 lead after the first quarter, the Lady Tigers outscored Central Catholic 10-2 in the second period for an 18-9 advantage at the half.
Morgan City took a 27-13 lead after three quarters before finishing off the game with a 15-6 scoring advantage in the final period.
Laqwaisha Bourgeois led Morgan City with 29 points, while Singleton and Dorsey each had four; Toups, three; and Walker, two.
Hallie Autin led Central Catholic with 15 points and three rebounds.
Other top contributors included Mary-Beth Blanchard, two points and one rebound; and Taylor Picou, two points.
On Saturday’s Central Catholic knocked off Berwick 45-39 in the Division 2 consolation finals.
The game was tied at 8 after the first quarter, and Berwick took an 18-14 lead into halftime.
Following an 18-9 scoring advantage in the third quarter, Central Catholic led 32-27 heading into the final period.
The Lady Eagles had a 13-12 scoring advantage against Berwick in the fourth quarter.
Autin led Central Catholic with 12 points and also had three steals, two assists and four rebounds.
Other top contributors included Emma Aucoin, 11 points and one rebound; Picou, 10 points, three steals, two assists and one rebound; Blanchard, eight points, one assist and one rebound; and Sydney Williams, four points, one assist and seven rebounds.
Berwick was led by Asia Jackson with 17 points. Mickenzie Reed and Brittany Boudreaux each scored 10 points and Jenna Beiza added two.
On Friday, Berwick fell to Centerville 59-18.
Centerville took a 19-0 lead after the first period and led 29-5 at the half and 41-9 after three quarters.
Jackson led Berwick with eight points, while Reed had four; Beiza, three; Boudreaux, two; and Nicole Johnson, one.
Also Saturday, Patterson fell in the Division 1 Consolation game to Lafayette Christian 49-44 in overtime.
The game was tied at 8 after the first quarter and Patterson took an 18-11 lead into halftime after outscoring Lafayette Christian 10-3 in the second quarter.
The Lumberjills led Lafayette Christian 26-16 after three quarters before the Lady Knights came back in the final period with a 20-10 scoring advantage to force overtime with the score tied at 36.
In the extra period, Lafayette Christian outscored Patterson 13-8 for the win.
Jazmin Evans led Patterson with 16 points, while Erykah Singleton also reached double figures with 10 points.
Other scorers for the Lumberjills included Gaylen Grogan, seven; Makayla Ruiz, six; Nia Broussard, three; and Kemprielle Williams, two.
In boys’ action, Central Catholic fell to E.D. White, 57-40, in the Division 1 championship game.
E.D. White outscored Central Catholic in three of the four quarters, taking a 14-11 lead after the first period and extending its advantage to 32-21 at the half.
Central Catholic edged E.D. White 12-10 in the scoring column in the third period to cut its deficit to 42-33, but E.D. White outscored the Eagles 15-7 in the final period.
Stefano Guarisco led Central Catholic with 15 points, while Jalen Johnson also reached double figures with 13.
Other scorers for Central Catholic were Samarick Paul with seven; Tanner Wiggins, three; and Charlie Solar, two.
Also Saturday, Berwick won its Division 1 consolation final against Centerville, 74-53.
Berwick led 14-10 after the first period and took a 29-21 lead at the half after outscoring Centerville 15-11 in the second period.
Berwick extended its lead to 46-35 after three quarters before concluding the game with a 28-18 scoring advantage in the final period.
Audwin Williams led four Panthers in double figures with 21 points.
Also reaching double-digits were Brandon Naverro with 14; Dralyn West with 12; and Donald Tillman with 10.
Other scorers for Berwick included Larenz Clark, six; Silton Span, five; Kobe Champine, three; Kenan Jones, two; and Tysin Meads, 1.
