MCHS to host Cohen for homecoming
Morgan City High School football coach Scott Tregle doesn’t remember the last time the Tigers won a homecoming contest.
Morgan City can change all of that Friday and keep their 2015 record spotless when they host Cohen College Preparatory School at 7 p.m.
Morgan City is 3-0 for the first time since 2012 when the squad started 4-0 en route to a 4-5 season.
A week ago, Morgan City routed North Central 57-0 in a game that Morgan City was able to play its entire roster.
The game started out with fireworks as Scott Comeaux returned the opening kickoff 71 yards for a score.
Offensively, Morgan City’s Ethan Scioneaux led the squad in rushing with 7 carries for 130 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Malik Phillips added 7 carries for 51 yards and a score.
Abram Hartley completed 1 of 3 passes for 16 yards and a score, which was caught by Makye Richard.
The Tigers totaled 309 yards of offense, including 293 rushing, while limiting North Central to 81 yards of offense (25 rushing and 56 passing). The defense also recorded three interceptions.
Tregle said his squad is believing in what the coaching staff wants to do.
“They (are) working hard, and they want to do the right thing, and they want to be successful,” he said.
This season, Scioneaux leads the Tigers’ rushing attack with 20 carries for 206 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Phillips had 27 carries for 182 yards and 3 touchdowns. Kedrick Scott has added 40 carries for 148 yards this season.
In the passing game, Hartley has completed 6 of 20 pass attempts for 111 yards with 2 touchdowns.
Richard is the Tigers’ leading receiver with 3 catches for 51 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Defensively, the Tigers are surrendering just 91.3 yards per game, including 29.6 on the ground.
Cohen enters Friday’s contest in the midst of a 33-game losing streak. The New Orleans-based school hasn’t won a game since Oct. 29, 2011, when the squad defeated Sophie B. Wright.
A week ago, the squad fell to St. Helena College and Career Academy 58-0.
Despite their lengthy losing streak, Tregle said Cohen isn’t a bad team.
“Watching film, they do a lot of good things,” he said. “They (are) just making some mistakes, shooting (themselves) in the foot when they drive the ball downfield. They do have some good athletes that break long runs, and they complete passes.”
Offensively, Cohen runs out of the I-formation, while they’ll line up in a spread offense at times.
Tregle said Cohen’s quarterback is a “decent” runner and he likes to throw to two of the team’s receivers.
With homecoming this week, Tregle said he has been trying to keep his team locked in on the game.
“We haven’t had any problems, homecoming wise,” he said. “(We) tell them every day it’s about the game. Let the fans, let the students enjoy the homecoming. We need to prepare to win Friday night.”
Friday’s game will begin at 7 p.m.
