MCHS to host South Terrebonne today
For the Morgan City High School softball program, the first-round of the Class 4A playoffs has been a nightmare.
During the past five years, the Morgan City Lady Tigers have been eliminated in that bi-district round from postseason contention, with their
last win coming in an upset of No. 16 seed Cabrini with a 3-2 victory in 2009.
“I have a meeting with the girls every year and I ask them their goals and almost everyone that comes in is (saying), ‘we want to win the
first round of (the) playoffs.
We want to win the first round of (the) playoffs’, and so I’m hoping that we can do that,” first-year head coach Tamara Keller said.
This year, Morgan City enters the playoffs as the No. 6 seed and while naturally they are looking to get over the initial hump that has plagued
them for so long, they also are looking to go a few rounds in the playoffs with such a high seed, Keller said.
“I think that they can finally see that happening, and that’s also is one of the reasons that we’ve been so successful this year,” Keller said.
Morgan City (15-10), the District 7-4A runner-up, will meet a familiar opponent in the first-round of the Class 4A playoffs in District 7-4A
foe South Terrebonne today at 6 p.m.
Keller said it was better for the team and for her to play someone they are familiar with.
“The girls are more familiar and so they know what they’re up against, and I think it helps them out a little bit,” Keller said.
While the Lady Tigers defeated the Lady Gators 6-0 at home and run-ruled them 15-5 on the road, Keller said she has warned her team about complacency.
“This week I’ve kind of been on them about, ‘don’t walk into this thinking that it’s an easy win because we beat them twice already,’” Keller
said Friday. “Any team can win. The playoffs is a different monster, and so I’m trying to get them to understand that and to be excited because we’ve put ourselves in a really good spot and I’d hate to see it get wasted because we’re playing South Terrebonne
and we think we’re going to walk all over them.”
As for the Lady Gators (14-12), who finished winless in District 7-4A, Keller said she thinks they will be excited in advancing to the postseason.
It is the first time the Lady Gators have advanced to the postseason since 2011.
“They’re definitely going to come out with some energy, and they have nothing to lose,” Keller said.
