Morgan City High School held an inter-squad scrimmage at Tiger Stadium Thursday.
The Tigers split their teams into first team offense versus first team defense and the second-team defense versus second-team offense.
Several Morgan City players scored touchdowns with Hector Tolento and Taaj Daniels each throwing two touchdowns, and Isaiah Scott tossing one. Makye Richard caught two touchdown passes, while Kalen Hillen ran in for a touchdown and caught one. Kedrick Scott also scored a touchdown, while Malik Phillips had a long run for a touchdown.
“I thought it was real productive,” Coach Scott Tregle said of the scrimmage. “We got a lot of work in. All the kids got to play. That was the main thing.”
Coach Scott Tregle praised returning quarterback Tolento for his work with the first string.
“He showed his experience and handled our offense well,” Tregle said.
The Morgan City coach said Tolento’s experience helped minimize mistakes on the first-team offense.
The first teams ran 12 plays and the second teams ran 10 plays, twice. Morgan City also did six goal-line plays and worked twice on punt team. They were 6-for-6 on extra point via kicker Daniel Valedez, and they also did 7-on-7 work
“We ran the ball pretty good,” Tregle said. “(We) blocked good. The quarterbacks looked pretty good throwing the ball. We’re still going to do a lot more on the passing game in the summer, but we’re just trying to get the run-blocking down.”
As for the spring as a whole, Tregle said his team did a lot of teaching and developed depth.
“We still have a long way to go and I told them that,” Tregle said.
However, he said he thought they made a lot of progress this spring.
Defensively, the Tigers will have Lloyd Singleton on their unit this year and Tregle said he played well in Thursday’s action.
The Tigers had 63 kids out for football, but just 10 seniors and 17 juniors. A lot of freshmen played during last year’s 2-8 campaign, and Tregle said they will have to step up this year.
