MCHS tops Berwick

Big second and third quarters helped propel the Morgan City High School Lady Tigers past Berwick 59-39 in girls’ basketball action Tuesday.
While Morgan City led 14-9 after a period of play, the Lady Tigers outscored Berwick 21-10 in the second quarter and 13-4 in the third period to take a commanding 48-23 lead heading into the final period.
Berwick outscored the Lady Tigers 16-11 in the final period.
Casey Chenevert led the Lady Tigers with 27 points, while Meya Morse added 11.
Other top contributors included Kaylyn Washington, 7 points; Nakerial Bourgeois, 5; and Steveyion Walker, 4.
Mickenzie Reed led Berwick with 17 points, while Aija Robinson had 11.
Other top contributors included Iesha Jones, 5; and McKenzie Baumgartner, 4.
This past weekend, Morgan City participated in Westgate’s tournament where it finished 0-2 with losses to McKinley, 76-40; and Comeaux, 64-48.
No stats were available from the McKinley contest, but against Comeaux, the Lafayette-area school used a 26-7 second quarter outburst to help it gain the upper hand.
While Comeaux led just 18-15 after the first quarter, Comeaux’s lead had ballooned to 44-22 by halftime.
Both teams scored 12 points in the third quarter, while Morgan City outscored Comeaux 14-8 in the fourth quarter.
Chenevert led the Lady Tigers with 27 points, including five 3-pointers, while Morse scored 16 and Washington, 5.
Morgan City (4-2) will return to action Thursday when it meets Franklin at 4:30 p.m. at Vandebilt Catholic’s Jack Becker Classic.
Berwick (2-6) will return to action Thursday when it travels to face Ascension Episcopal in a 6:15 p.m. contest.
Central Catholic
tops Assumption
Central Catholic outscored Assumption in every quarter in route to a 66-44 victory at home Tuesday.
Assumption entered the contest ranked No. 4 in the latest Louisiana High School Athletic Association unofficial Class 4A power rankings, while Central Catholic is ranked fifth in the Class 1A rankings.
The Lady Eagles took a 13-3 lead after the first quarter, a 34-15 lead into halftime and led 53-33 after three quarters.
Randi Brown led Central Catholic with 32 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks, 1 steal and 1 assist, while Meo Knight added 23 points, 11 rebounds, 4 steals, 4 assists and 1 block.
Other top contributors included Megan Landry, 7 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal; Hallie Autin, 4 points and a rebound; and Gee Garrett, 8 rebounds and 1 assist.
Central Catholic (5-1) will return to action Thursday when it begins play in the Jack Becker Classic with a 3:30 p.m. contest against South Lafourche.
Patterson falls to
H.L. Bourgeois
The Patterson Lumberjills fell to H.L. Bourgeois 49-43 at home Tuesday.
Gaylen Grogan had a double-double for the Lumberjills with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Nakia Brooks had 13 points and 6 rebounds.
Other top contributors included Nia Broussard, 8 points; Nyla Holder, 5 points and 6 rebounds; and Kemprielle Williams, 4 points, 6 rebounds.
This weekend at Westgate’s tournament, Patterson defeated Westgate 36-24 and fell to Comeaux, 53-24.
Against Westgate, Brooks had 11 points and 9 rebounds, while Jazmin Evans had 12 points and Erykah Singleton, 3 points and 10 rebounds.
Other top contributors included Nia Broussard, 4 points; and Williams, 3 points and 5 rebounds.
In the loss to Comeaux, Grogan had 4 points and 7 rebounds, while Broussard scored 6 points.
Other top contributors included Holder 3 points and 6 rebounds; Brooks, 2 points and 6 rebounds; Jamiri Brown, 4 points; and Makayla Ruiz, 3 points.
Patterson (1-7) will return to action Monday when it travels to face South Terrebonne for junior varsity and varsity action, beginning at 6 p.m.
