MCHS tops Jeanerette

By CORWIN MURRAY

Morgan City had several big plays in Friday’s scrimmage with Jeanerette at Tiger Stadium but struggled with red zone scoring.
“We showed we can move the ball into scoring position, but then we had some miscues that have to be cleaned up,” third-year Morgan City head coach Scott Tregle said. “But we had a couple nice scoring plays, too.”
MCHS got big pass plays from Kalen Hillen, Makye Richard and Keith Henderson in the opening 15-play series.
“We have some good athletes, so I expect the big plays, but we have to be more consistent in scoring position,” Tregle stressed. “It wasn’t an effort thing. I thought the offense played pretty well and that Jeanerette is much improved over last season. They were disciplined and they played hard.”
Another standout on offense was quarterback Isaiah Escort, who had a touchdown pass to Hillen among his completions. Sophomore Trey Derouen had a couple catches, while running backs Devonta Grogan and Ke’Sean Francois ran the football well.
Morgan City had three touchdowns while it didn’t surrender any to Jeanerette.
The Tigers’ defense was solid throughout with defensive linemen Fred Ferguson, Gage Koblect, Tai Nguyen and James Bennett, among others, pressuring the quarterback.
“That’s our most experienced group and pretty much the leaders of the team, so we expect a lot from them,” Tregle said.
The linebackers were also active with Hillen and Scott Comeaux leading the way.
“We will be a little young at defensive back, and we’ll put some offensive folks like Makye (Richard) back there,” Tregle said.
Jeanerette didn’t score and never got past the 50-yard line in the scrimmage’s live portion.
The scrimmage opened with junior varsity play between Morgan City and Patterson.
“Both our JV’s didn’t get work during the week, so we decided to let them get game reps, too,” Tregle said.
The Morgan City Jamboree also will open with junior varsity action Friday, with Morgan City meeting Centerville in a 5 p.m. contest. Morgan City will kick off varsity play against Berwick and will face Patterson later in the evening to conclude the jamboree.
