MCHS will host Sophie B. Wright Friday
Morgan City will be looking to bounce back from a week 1 loss to Berwick when it takes on Sophie B. Wright at home Friday.
Meanwhile, Sophie B. Wright will be looking to start its regular season on the right foot.
While the New Orleans-based school was schedule to open its season against Crescent City Christian, Crescent City cancelled their football program, Morgan City Coach Scott Tregle said.
In jamboree action, Sophie B. Wright fell to Lake Area New Tech, 16-0.
Wright has an eight-game losing streak that began with last season’s loss to Morgan City in Week 2.
A year ago, Morgan City defeated Wright, 6-0, in Morgan City.
“They’re real big, fast, athletic, tall,” Tregle said of this year’s Wright squad. “They have a lot of size, and that’s the main thing I’m seeing. They look a little more organized than last year. They’re running a Wing T. They run a few things well. They don’t run a lot of plays. We didn’t see them run a lot of plays in the jamboree, but the one’s they ran, they ran them well.”
Tregle said Wright’s quarterback is a good runner, while on defense, the team sports a linebacker that blitzes nearly every play. The team’s nose guard is good, too, Tregle said.
Wright will play a 50 look and line up in cover 1 and could use some cover 0 and stack the line of scrimmage in certain situations, Tregle said.
Morgan City was without standout wide receiver last week due to injury, Tregle said.
The senior will be out four to six weeks after injuring himself on a punt return in the jamboree against Patterson, Tregle said.
A week ago, junior Kalen Hillen provided a spark plug for Morgan City on offense with five catches for 121 yards and a touchdown.
Tregle commended Hillen’s play, but noted Hillen needs help.
“We got to get some other people involved more, because he can’t just carry the load by himself,” Tregle said of Hillen.
Tregle noted that other guys such as Ke’Sean Francois and Devonta Grogan need to get the ball more in the Tigers’ offense.
A week ago, Isaiah Escort made his first start at quarterback for Morgan City, completing 7 of 16 passes with three interceptions and 120 yards and one score. He also had one rushing touchdown.
Ethan Scioneaux led the ground game with 18 carries for 56 yards.
Friday’s game at Tiger Stadium is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
