Minton pleased with CCHS' spring work

New Central Catholic head football coach Tommy Minton had two goals he wanted to achieve coming into this spring and Wednesday, just hours after the squad concluded its final practice in pads for the spring session, he said he felt like his squad did well in achieving both of them.
Minton, who took over the Eagles’ program at the beginning of March, said the goals for this spring were to introduce his spread offense and the terminology that accompanies it as well as try to increase depth and numbers on the squad.
Wednesday afternoon, he called the spring “a good adjustment period.”
He said the Eagles, who will not hold a spring game, finished spring practice with 43 players.
“(I) feel real good about that,” he said. “I think now as we go through the summer, we can take those numbers and start to develop some depth and get those kids accustomed to what we want and be able to buy some time with some of these younger kids, get them on the field and not have to play so many guys every snap of the ball both ways.”
While the Eagles do have some spots to fill from a year ago, including quarterback and wide receiver, Minton said he is happy with the talent he sees.
“I feel like the talent level’s good,” he said. “There are areas where I think we’re thin. We don’t have a ton of linemen. The kids we’ve got there have worked hard, and I think we’re going to be able to put together a good crew there, but I’m worried about depth there. We need to develop some depth there. I feel like (at) the skill positions, we got some kids that can play. We got some kids that can run pretty good, and I feel like we’ll be able to do some things I want to do offensively because of that skill level.”
When he came to Central Catholic, one thing Minton said he wanted to establish was an offseason weight program. He said that thus far, the team has been working hard in the program.
“We’re going to try to push that through the summer,” Minton said. “That’s got to be a year-round process, and that’s got to be ingrained in them that that’s just got to be part of the lifestyle.
In addition to workouts this summer as well as work on the football field, Minton said his squad at Central Catholic, like he did at Patterson, will be participating in 7-on-7 tournaments and also will be practicing with other teams and getting their linemen work in the process. The Eagles also will be hosting their annual tournament July 12.
