Morgan City, Berwick win volleyball contests

The Morgan City Lady Tigers picked up a district win Monday with a 3-0 (25-6, 25-12, 25-20) win.
The Lady Tigers recorded 18 aces in the win, including 10 by Taylor Prince. Prince had an impressive serving run during the match’s first set.
Prince also recorded a block, two assists and nine digs in the win.
Other top contributors for Morgan City included Jaiveianna Jones, 12 kills, one assist and two digs; Layne Reynaud, two aces, two kills, 20 assists and four digs; Kloé Liner, four aces, six kills, one block and four digs; Brandi Ingram, an ace, a kill, an assist and six digs; Savannah Loupe, one ace and 11 digs; Dwanna LeBeau, five kills; and Marilynn Bailey, seven digs.
For Patterson, Gaylen Grogan had three points, three kills, four digs and a block, while Arian Grogan had three points, two aces, two kills and a block.
Other top contributors included Rachel Easley, a point and nine digs; Katelyn Thibodaux, nine digs; Nyria Robinson, three kills and a dig; and Kailyn Johnson, three digs and four assists.
In junior varsity action, Morgan City won 25-21, 25-21
The Lady Tigers recorded 14 aces in the contest, including eight by Alex Thompson. She also added four kills and four digs.
Other top contributors for the Lady Tigers included Cecily Feliciano, four aces, one kill, six assists and five digs; Karley Guidry, two aces, five kills, three assists and two digs; LeBeau, three kills and six digs; Sara Gaudet, seven digs; Katelyn Gautreaux, six digs; Pearly Rainey, three kills; and Elicia Dorsey, one block.
According to the latest unofficial power rankings released by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association this morning, Morgan City (10-17 overall, 3-2 in district) moved up a spot from a week ago to No. 16 in Division 3, while Patterson (7-11, 1-4) slipped one spot to No. 27. The top 24 teams in each division make the postseason.
This past weekend, Morgan City split matches with Sam Houston and Acadiana, falling to Sam Houston Saturday after defeating Acadiana Friday.
Against Sam Houston, the Lady Tigers fell 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 19-25, 24-26) Saturday.
The Tigers recorded eight blocks in the contest, including five by Jones. Jones added 14 kills and a dig.
Other top contributors included Liner, two aces, seven kills, one assist and two digs; Reynaud, two aces, two kills, a solo block, and 15 assists; Ingram, one ace, four kills, one block and five digs; Marilynn Bailey, one ace, one assist and five digs; Loupe, one ace and eight digs; and Prince, one block and one dig.
On Friday, the Lady Tigers defeated Acadiana 3-2 (24-26, 25-20, 24-26, 29-27, 15-13)
The Lady Tigers combined for 16 aces, 57 kills, eight blocks and 103 digs in the win.
Jones led the squad with 32 kills, as well as five blocks, a block assist and five digs.

Morgan City will return to action Wednesday when it hosts Berwick in a district contest that also will serve as the Lady Tigers’ annual “Paint the Pit Pink” contest.
Freshmen action is set for 3:30 p.m. with junior varsity and varsity play to follow.
Patterson will face E.D. White today on the road in district play. Junior varsity action is set for a 4:30 p.m. start with varsity play to follow at 5:30 p.m.
Berwick defeats
Central Lafourche
The Berwick Lady Panthers picked up a 3-0 (27-25, 25-21, 25-21) win on the road against Central Lafourche in nondistrict play Monday.
Brie Hill led the Lady Panthers with 11 kills, six blocks, an assist and 15 digs, while Ashton Morales added two kills, 13 assists, a block and two digs and Hannah Carpenter, 20 digs.
Other top contributors for the Lady Panthers include Maddie Gray, one ace, 11 digs, one block and six kills; and Diana Grace Guarisco, one ace, one kill, two assists and five digs.
In junior varsity action, Berwick won 3-0 (25-23, 22-25, 15-10).
Sydney Aucoin led the Lady Panthers with six kills and a block, while Mary Jordan Melancon added three kills, one ace and a block.
Other top contributors included Madeleine Hover, one kill, 11 assists and an ace; Jordan Lipari, two kills, two digs and three aces; and Rosalyn Gros, six digs.
In Freshmen action, Berwick won 25-20, 25-22.
According to the latest power ranking released today, Berwick (11-8, 2-2) is No. 13, up a spot from a week ago.
Central Catholic wins Think Pink Tournament
The Central Catholic Lady Eagles won Dunham’s Think Pink Tournament this past weekend with a 7-0 mark.
Among the Lady Eagles’ wins were two against both St. John of Plaquemine, the No. 5 team in Division 5; and Louis McGhee, the No. 6 team in Division 4.
“I think it’s the part of the season where the girls are peaking, if you would say,” Central Catholic coach Latashia Wise said. “They are finding their own identity and chemistry. We played 6 games on Saturday and two three-game matches, and the girls persevered. All of the tough teams we have played early on in the season definitely helped in the wins in (this) tourney.”
The Lady Eagles opened the tournament with a 25-16, 25-12 win against St. John and then defeated them again Saturday 25-16, 25-17.
The Lady Eagles defeated McGhee twice Saturday, 25-15, 25-22 in their first meeting; and later in the day, 25-16, 24-26, 15-13.
Also Saturday, Central Catholic knocked off Runnels, 25-15, 25-16; Hahnville, 29-27, 25-15; and Dunham, 25-20, 21-25, 15-6.
No individual stats were available from these games.
The wins help boost the Lady Eagles (20-8, 1-0) up one spot in the latest power ranking released this morning as the squad now is ranked No. 3 in Division 5.
Central Catholic, which has won eight straight, will look to keep their momentum going today when they travel to face Covenant Christian in district play. Junior varsity action will begin at 4 p.m. with varsity to follow.
