Morgan City routs North Central 57-0

Morgan City wasted no time building a comfortable lead against the North Central Hurricanes Friday night in a 57-0 rout.
The Tigers scored on the opening kickoff when Scott Comeaux ran it back 71 yards for a touchdown.
North Central then lost a fumble on its first offensive play of the game, which set up a 26-yard touchdown run by Ethan Scioneaux to give Morgan City a 13-0 lead just 32 seconds into the game.
And, Morgan City was just getting started scoring.
Before the first quarter ended, the Tigers added three more touchdowns and a safety to bring the score to 36-0.
The referees started a running clock with about 5:30 to play in the second quarter that would continue to run without stoppage most of the rest of the game.
Morgan City went into halftime up 43-0 with 225 rushing yards and would finish the game with 293 rushing yards and 309 yards of total offense.
Scioneaux led the way for the Tigers, gaining 130 yards on the ground on seven carries and three touchdowns.
Comeaux also had a big game for Morgan City. In addition to his kickoff return for a touchdown, he had two interceptions in the third quarter.
North Central threw three interceptions and lost two fumbles during the game. The Hurricanes gained just four first downs and had 81 yards of total offense
Morgan City coach Scott Tregle said he expected the type of game that unfolded Friday.
“Everything we did pretty much worked,” Tregle said. “I tried to get everybody some touches, everybody experience. Everybody got in the game.”
As Tregle said prior to the game, he believed the team needed a game like this one to get everyone playing time and get healthy after having tougher games against Berwick and Sophie B. Wright.
“The more playing time these guys get, the better they’re going to get,” Tregle said.
Tregle said running back Trey Derouen was injured and didn’t play in Friday’s game so Scioneaux “carried the load” at running back.
Malik Phillips is usually the Tigers “go-to running back,” but they didn’t have to use him much against North Central, Tregle said.
North Central coach Jacobi Thierry said the 1A school playing the 4A school was “almost a gimme.”
The Hurricanes dressed out just 17 players for the game and started eighth-graders and seventh-graders, Thierry said.
“For them to come out and see 60 guys on the sidelines on the team, I think it did something to them mentally, because we’re kind of used to facing teams with 30 or something close to where we’re at,” Thierry said.
The size of the stadium also was intimidating to his players, he said.
“They came out there, and Morgan City got after it,” Thierry said. “And we just never really bounced back.”
After the game was out of reach, the North Central coaching staff decided to use the rest of the game to see how the team could get better for next week, Thierry said.
“We put some people in some different positions to see exactly how they could perform, and where we could play them at next week to try to help us get a W,” Thierry said.
North Central plays Ville Platte this week.
Thierry said he believes the Hurricanes will play much better when they get into district play because they’ll feel that they are more evenly matched against other 1A schools.
“This was a good experience to play a 4A school to see where we’re at,” Thierry said. “It’s a measuring stick for us.”
Though the scoreboard didn’t show it, Thierry said he thought North Central “had a lot of good stops on defense,” he said.
“We’ve just got to work on our offense, which is our young spot,” he said.
Next up, Morgan City will face Cohen of New Orleans for homecoming Friday.
Cohen has good athletes and speed, has faced big schools and is similar to Sophie B. Wright, which Morgan City played two weeks ago, Tregle said.
“I don’t know how long it’s been since we’ve won a homecoming, but that’s the goal is to win our homecoming,” Tregle said. “That’s what I told the kids. We’ve got to come out ready and focus and let the other people enjoy the homecoming activities. And we need to worry about winning this football game.”
