No. 2 Central Catholic will host Logansport

The Central Catholic Lady Eagles will begin what they hope is a long playoff run Thursday when they host Logansport in Class 1A playoff action.
While the Lady Eagles spent a lot of the season ranked No. 1 in the Class 1A power rankings, the squad was seeded No. 2 behind North Central heading into the postseason after North Central edged them in power rating, 17.72-17.71 for the top spot.
The move came after Central Catholic had fallen to one of the better Class 4A teams, Ellender, in the last week of the season.
“You can’t take any game for granted and us, the way we played down the stretch against Ellender, just something that small,” Central Catholic coach Jamarr Garrett said. “You let some quarter slip away from you and boom, there you go. That’s the difference between being (No.) 1 and No. 2.”
Although Garrett said it was disappointing for the team to drop, he has expressed to them that the number really doesn’t matter come postseason play.
While the Lady Eagles breezed through much of their season, Garrett said playing games like Vermilion Catholic, who enters the postseason ranked No. 4 in the postseason in Class 1A, and University High, one of the top teams in Class 3A, as well as Ellender all have helped the Lady Eagles and will benefit them by offering a challenge.
“I think it’s really big. (I) don’t want to seem overconfident but we weren’t really tested too much after the U-High game,” he said. “The second time against V.C., we didn’t play our best game and they actually played one of their better games and we were still lucky enough to pull it out. It’s going to play big down the stretch.”
On Thursday, the Lady Eagles will face a Logansport team that, while seeded No. 31, has a win against No. 12 seed Block in district play and narrowly lost to No. 15 seed St. Mary’s.
Logansport finished 7-3 in District 3-1A and 10-13 for the season.
Garrett said the game will be a tough matchup.
“They’re a pretty athletic team,” he said. “They rebound the ball well.”
Thursday’s game will begin at 6 p.m. and admission is $6.
