Panthers fall to Wolfpack

A big third-quarter by West St. Mary hurt the Berwick Panthers in a 57-50 loss to West St. Mary Tuesday.
While West St. Mary entered the third quarter with a slim 23-22 lead, West St. Mary outscored Berwick 22-10 in the quarter for a 45-32 lead after three quarters.
Berwick responded with an 18-12 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough.
Berwick took a slim 7-6 lead after the first quarter, while West St. Mary edged Berwick in the scoring column in the second period, 17-15, to go into halftime tied.
Audwin Williams led Berwick with 24 points; Brandon Naverro scored 10; and Tyvon Batiste and Cody Roberie each scored six.
Berwick (6-8) will return to action Friday when it travels to face Kaplan in a non-district contest set for a 7:15 p.m. tip.
Central Catholic opens district with a win
The Central Catholic Eagles opened District 7-1A play with a 67-48 win against Highland Baptist in New Iberia.
Central Catholic used big second and fourth quarters to pull away for the win.
The Eagles made nine 3-pointers in the contest.
The 3-point shot, Central Catholic coach Ree Case said, is a key element of the squad’s offense and early, they couldn’t get the shots to fall even though they had good looks at the basket.
“Once we started making them, we were able to score some points,” Case said.
Both Central Catholic and Highland Baptist were tied at nine after the first quarter, but the Eagles took the lead at halftime, 32-26.
Central Catholic continued to add to its lead in the third quarter, ending the period with a 45-36 lead before outscoring Highland Baptist in the fourth quarter, 22-12, for the final margin.
Nicholas Case led the Eagles with 20 points, while Stefano Guarisco scored 13 and Tyler Hoffpauir, 12.
In junior varsity action, the Eagles defeated Highland Baptist 51-20.
Cedric Gant led the squad with 12 points, while Cooper LeBlanc scored 10.
Central Catholic (7-7 overall, 1-0 in district) will return to action Friday when it hosts district foe Vermilion Catholic in a 7 p.m. contest.
Morgan City falls to Kaplan
The Morgan City Tigers fell at Kaplan 41-27, Tuesday, in nondistrict action.
While the Tigers mostly kept pace with Kaplan in the second through fourth quarters, they were hurt by a rough start to the game as they were outscored 17-3 in the first quarter.
Morgan City trailed 22-10 at halftime and 31-19 after the third quarter.
Morgan City scored virtually all of its points via 3-pointers. Morgan City hit eight treys, and connected on just one two-point field goal, a shot by Buddy Humphrey in the fourth quarter.
The Tigers also had attempted just two free throws in the contest as a team, both by Humphrey in the second quarter as he went 1-for-2 from the line.
Abram Hartley led the Tigers with 12 points, while Deandre Walker had six; and Brady Fryou, Humphrey and Marquis Green each had three points.
Morgan City (1-13) will return to action Friday when they make the short trip to Patterson to face the Lumberjacks.
