Patterson’s Charles throws no-hitter

The Patterson Lumberjacks’ Sirbatian Charles tossed a no-hitter and Jalen Broussard had an RBI-single in the sixth inning to lift the Lumberjacks’ to a 2-1 victory against Cecilia Thursday.
Charles, who is 5-0 on the mound this season, tossed seven innings and surrendered an unearned run, walked two and fanned six.
Patterson scored the game-winning run off the bat of Broussard, who finished 1-for-2.
The hit was one of just four on the night for Patterson.
“Obviously the story of the night was Sirbatian and his no hitter,” Patterson head coach Ryan Jensen said. “We needed an outing like that from him because we were not very good offensively. We were fortunate to do just enough and get some runners on base, and Jalen comes through with the clutch hit in the (sixth). I think one of the things that has made this team different from so many of our past teams is there is someone new every game who comes up with a big hit, defensive play, or pitching performance that sorta pushes us over the edge to a victory. It’s a fun group to work with.”
While Cecilia plated a run in the top of the third, Patterson responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth and another in the bottom of the sixth.
Taylor Harris led the Lumberjacks with a 2-for-2 performance with a double and a run, while Spencer Landry was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run and Broussard, 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Patterson (11-6) will return to action Saturday when it travels to take on Hamilton Christian at 4 p.m.
Berwick routs Franklin
The Berwick Panthers run-ruled Franklin 18-3 in five innings Thursday.
Berwick did all of its damage in the first four innings, with 10 runs in the first, four in the second, one in the third and three more in the fourth.
Franklin scored three runs in the top of the fifth for the final margin.
In the win, Berwick’s Brannon Melancon and Brandon Fryou combined to hold Franklin hitless.
Melancon earned the win for the Panthers. In four innings he surrendered four walks, hit a batter and fanned nine.
Fryou pitched an inning of relief and surrendered three runs — two earned — walked two, hit a batter and fanned nine.
Offensively, Berwick pounded out 14 hits in the contest.
Neal Theriot led the Panthers with a 3-for-3 performance with a double and an RBI, while Austin Spencer finished 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs and Daniel Gray, 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Other top contributors for the Panthers were Justin Morvant, 2-for-3, an RBI; Nick Duthu, 1-for-1, a double and an RBI; and Micah Soileau, Andrew Askew and Cameron Wiley, all 1-for-1 with an RBI.
The Panthers (12-5 overall, 2-0 in district) will return to action Saturday when it travels to New Orleans to take on Brother Martin in a 1 p.m. varsity contest at the school. Brother Martin is ranked No. 3 in the latest Class 5A unofficial Louisiana High School Athletic Association power rankings. The game will be preceded by an 11 a.m. junior varsity contest.
MCHS edges
South Terrebonne 2-1
Morgan City High School improved to 2-0 in District 7-4A action, holding off South Terrebonne for a 2-1 victory at South Terrebonne Thursday.
While South Terrebonne got a runner to third base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Morgan City’s Grant Perry struck out a batter to end the game.
South Terrebonne scored a run in the bottom of the third inning, and Morgan City plated its two runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Morgan City scored its runs on back-to-back two-out doubles by Evan Stadalis and Matt Lorenzo.
Stadalis and Lorenzo each led Morgan City with a 1-for-3 performance with a double and an RBI.
Perry earned the complete-game victory for the Tigers. In seven innings, he surrendered two hits, one walk and fanned four.
Morgan City (6-8 overall, 2-0 in district) now sits atop the district standings in a tie with Vandebilt Catholic as both are 2-0. The Tigers will return to action Saturday when they host the Terriers. Junior varsity action will begin at 11 a.m., while varsity is scheduled for 1 p.m. However, the games could be pushed back due to today’s rain.
