Patterson Lumberjacks roll past Richwood Rams, 56-18

By CORWIN MURRAY

The Patterson Lumberjacks dominated on both sides of the ball en route to a lopsided 56-18 win against Richwood in Class 3A first-round playoff action Friday.
“The playoffs are always different,” Patterson head coach Chad Blanchard said. “You can’t take anyone lightly regardless of their record. They were a good team. They were in the playoffs for a reason. But we came out hot, we did a good job on defense and we scored early, and that carried us.”
Patterson (8-3), the seventh-seed in Class 3A, will host Loranger (7-4), the 10th-seed, in second-round playoff action this Friday.
Against Richwood, the Lumberjacks’ offense got things going with a bang, when quarterback Sirbatian Charles hooked up with standout receiver Mykel Jones for a 15-yard touchdown on the team’s first possession. Jones made a one-handed catch with a Richwood defender holding on to his left arm. Christian Soria added the PAT kick and the rout was on.
Patterson’s defense added a safety at the 7:31 mark of the first quarter for a 9-0 lead, and Jones took the ensuing kick 60 yards for a touchdown, extending the lead to 16-0 with more than 7 minutes left in the first quarter.
The ’Jacks added two second-quarter rushing touchdowns from Tristen Ausama and an 18-yard pass from Charles to Daylon Charlot to push the lead to 36-0 with 3:08 left before the half.
Charles finished the night 10-of-15 passing for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Charlot had four catches for 76 yards and a score while Jones had three receptions for 47 yards and a score.
“Offensively, we just wanted to see what they would try to take away,” Blanchard said. “They’ve shown some different things on film, and even tonight they put 10 in the box at times and then again they played coverage, but I thought we did a good job of keeping them off balance.”
Richwood (3-8) finally got a positive play just before halftime when David Allen took a quarterback keeper 78 yards for a touchdown with 2:36 left. The Rams’ quarterback keeper would torment the Patterson defense all night. Allen carried 14 times for 249 yards and three touchdowns.
“That little quarterback was hard to contain,” Blanchard said. “He’s a good football player. We saw him make those type plays all season on film, but we did enough in all three phases tonight to put ourselves in a good position.”
Richwood had just 12 yards rushing, 2 yards passing and one first down before Allen’s run.
Patterson led 36-6 at halftime.
Richwood got more heroics from Allen to start the third quarter. The senior broke free for a 65-yard touchdown to bring the score to 36-12 with more than 11 minutes to play.
Patterson added a 13-yard touchdown from Ausama to close out the quarter with a 43-12 lead. Ausama carried 16 times for 140 yards and three touchdowns Friday to pace the ’Jacks’ ground game. John Davis also carried eight times for 34 yards.
The Rams got one last 56-yard scoring run from Allen in the fourth quarter while the ’Jacks got short touchdown runs from Charles and D.J. Jones to close out the game.
In Loranger’s win, it held Bogalusa to minus 16 yards rushing and just 89 total yards Friday at home. Loranger beat Bogalusa for the second week in a row by a combined score of 79-33.
