Patterson wins its hoops tournament

The Patterson Lumberjacks remained perfect on the season as they won their Lumberjack Invitational this weekend with a 68-63 win against Westgate in Saturday’s championship game.
Patterson either outscored Westgate or was matched in scoring in each quarter as the host squad gutted out the victory.
The win was the Lumberjacks third in three days as they have started their season with a 3-0 mark.
Patterson head coach Ryan Taylor said he was happy with his squad’s effort.
“We are learning on the run, and our guys responded well,” he said. “We played against 3 different styles this weekend and had to do some things that we have not had a lot of practice time to prepare for. I was proud of how they adjusted to each style.”
In Saturday’s final, Patterson led 21-20 after a quarter of play and just 33-32 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Patterson outscored Westgate 16-15 for a 49-47 lead heading into the fourth.
Taylan Grogan led three Lumberjacks in double figures with 16 points. Both Nehemiah Augustus and Daylon Charlot scored 14, while Larry Turner and Dontrell Benjamin each netted seven and Jedrick Gunner, six, to lead the squad.
In the third-place game Saturday, St. Martinville defeated Central Catholic 49-45.
Nicholas Case led Central Catholic with 12, while Tyler Hoffpauir scored 9 and Stefano Guarisco and Jalen Johnson each contributed 8.
While St. Martinville jumped out to a 13-4 advantage following the first quarter, Central Catholic responded with an 18-8 advantage in the second quarter for a 22-21 halftime lead.
The Eagles led 34-30 after three quarters before St. Martinville used a 19-11 fourth-quarter scoring advantage to secure the win.
In Saturday’s consolation final, Mississippi-based Hancock High School defeated West St. Mary 77-37.
Patterson advanced to Saturday’s final after defeating St. Martinville 55-50 Friday.
Augustus and Turner scored 13 and 11, respectively, while Grogan scored nine, Gunner, eight, and Benjamin and Charlot, seven each.
In the other semifinal, Westgate nailed 13 3-pointers en route to a 71-57 victory against Central Catholic.
While Westgate led just 17-16 after the first quarter, the New Iberia-based team began to pull away in the second and third quarters, outscoring Central Catholic a combined 43-31 in the two quarters for a 60-47 lead after three quarters.
Johnson led Central Catholic with 13 points, while Guarisco and Case each scored 11 points.
In other action Friday, West St. Mary edged Morgan City, 57-56, to advance to the consolation finals.
No individual stats were available for Morgan City.
Taylor thanked all tournament’s sponsors and volunteers who he said helped make the tournament successful.
“It means a lot to our program to have these people donate their time to these kids,” he said.
Patterson will return to action Thursday at 3 p.m. when it takes on McDonogh No. 35 in St. Martinville’s tournament, while Morgan City (1-12) will have a long break before returning to the court Jan. 7 in a 6 p.m. contest at Kaplan.
Central Catholic (4-4) will return to action today when it hosts White Castle. Junior varsity action is set for a 5 p.m. tip with varsity to follow.
Berwick falls at
Hanson tournament
The Berwick Panthers fell to Jeanerette 60-40 Friday at the Hanson Memorial Holiday Classic.
No individual statistics were available.
The Panthers (6-7) will return to action Jan. 4 when they travel to Donaldsonville to face Ascension Catholic.
