Singleton propels Cardinal Lumber to 1-0 victory
Cardinal Lumber (Patterson High) managed to get Thursday’s lone area Swampland Baseball game in with a 1-0 victory against the Braves (H.L. Bourgeois).
Joel Singleton not only earned the complete-game victory for Cardinal Lumber but he also drove in the game’s lone run in the bottom of the first inning.
On the mound, Singleton surrendered three hits and fanned seven.
“Joel Singleton was lights out tonight,” Cardinal Lumber coach Ryan Jensen said Thursday. “This was the best he has thrown since he has been here. He threw (three) pitches for a strike and never allowed a runner to reach (third) base. I guess it’s only fitting he had the RBI-single in the first as well. You have to credit our defense as well. We haven’t played to our defensive abilities this week, so it was good to see us put it together tonight behind Joel’s pitching performance.”
Offensively, Singleton finished 1-for-2 with an RBI, while Brennan Gouaux led the squad with a 2-for-3 performance with a double to lead Cardinal Lumber, who had just five hits.
On Wednesday, Cardinal Lumber dropped a high-scoring game to BCG Services, 17-11, at Patterson.
While Cardinal Lumber led 7-3 after two innings following a six-run second inning, BCG Services clawed their way back into the contest with three runs each in the fourth and fifth to take a 9-7 lead.
They extended their lead to 15-7 in the top of the sixth before Cardinal Lumber plated four runs in the bottom of the frame to cut its deficit to 15-11.
BCG Services added two runs in the top of the seventh.
BCG Services outhit Cardinal Lumber 16-11, while both teams committed five errors.
Bryce Beaubouef suffered the loss in relief of starter Jamey Fabre. In 1.2 innings, Beaubouef surrendered three runs on two hits with three walks and one strikeout.
Fabre finished 3-for-4 offensively for Cardinal Lumber, while Singleton was 3-for-5 with an RBI.
Other top offensive contributors included Beaubouef, 1-for-4, a home run and three RBIs; Gouaux, 1-for-3, a double and three RBIs; John Brooks, 1-for-4, a double and an RBI; and Lukas Carnley, an RBI.

In other action Thursday, Taco Bell’s (Berwick High) contest at Robichaux Ford (Vandebilt Catholic) was rained out as well as Skipper’s Sporting Goods’ (Morgan City High) game at BCG Services. The Taco Bell-Robichaux Ford make-up date is projected for Wednesday, while no makeup date has been set for Skipper’s contest with BCG Services.
The Berwick High-based summer squad will return to action Saturday and Sunday when they participate in tournament play in Pensacola, Florida, while Skipper’s will hit the field again Monday when it makes the short trip to Amelia to face Halimar Shipyard (Central Catholic) in 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. junior varsity and varsity contests, respectively.
Halimar Shipyard’s action with Jester’s Court (Central Lafourche) was halted in the bottom of the first inning of the junior varsity contest due to rain. The junior varsity and varsity contests will be made up Wednesday.
