Sixth inning dooms Lady Panthers

The Berwick Lady Panthers fell to Thibodaux High 7-6 in softball action in Berwick Wednesday.
The sixth inning was the Lady Panthers’ downfall as errors combined with Thibodaux hits allowed the visitors to overcome a 5-0 deficit and take a 7-5 lead.
Berwick got one run back in the bottom of the sixth after a heads-up play by Berwick in which coach Lloyd Burchfield asked the umpire if the Thibodaux catcher dropped the ball on a third strike that would have given the Tigers the final out of the inning.
The umpire said he did and the batter on the play, Shelby Bergeron, who was near first base at the the time, headed for second base while Thibodaux High scrambled to get back on the field. She later scored in the inning to cut the Lady Panthers’ deficit to 7-6.
However, Berwick could get no closer as it was retired in order in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Berwick scored its first five runs in the first two innings as the Lady Panthers plated two runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the bottom of the second.
Both teams had five hits apiece, while Berwick committed four errors.
Rennen DeLatte suffered the loss for the Lady Panthers. In seven innings, she surrendered seven runs on five hits with one walk and fanned three.
Jordan Lipari led the Lady Panthers offensively with two hits, including a double, while Shannon Theriot also had two hits.
Berwick (0-6) will return to action Friday when it begins play in its annual Lady Panther Classic. The Lady Panthers will face Captain Shreve in a 3 p.m. contest at Berwick, while at 7 p.m. Friday Berwick will meet Morgan City on field five at the Berwick Civic Complex.
Morgan City defeats Lutcher
The Morgan City Lady Tigers defeated Lutcher 7-1 on the road Wednesday.
Morgan City had nine hits in the win, led by Kennedy Hebert’s 2-for-4 performance with a triple and two runs.
Other top contributors included Brandi Ingram, 2-for-3, a stolen base; Tyler Hebert, 2-for-4, an RBI; Mattie Rivere, 1-for-3, a double and two RBIs; and Dwanna LeBeau, 1-for-4, an RBI and two runs.
Despite its offensive success, Morgan City left seven runners on base.
On the mound, Morgan City’s Tyler Hebert earned the win. In seven innings, she surrendered one earned run on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Morgan City (4-2) will return to action Friday when it begins play in Berwick High School’s Lady Panther Classic. The Lady Tigers will meet Berwick at 7 p.m. Friday at the Berwick Civic Complex.
