South Terrebonne defeats Morgan City, 28-14

By MICHAEL HEARN, The Houma Courier

It took eight weeks, but the South Terrebonne Gators got their first win of the 2015 season.
Behind a consistent running game and a big play in the passing game, the Gators turned back Morgan City, 28-14, Friday.
“We needed this win, and it got that monkey off our back a little bit,” South Terrebonne coach Richard Curlin said. “The kids have obviously still been working hard, and we didn’t help ourselves too much in the first half. In the second half, we made some adjustments and played better.”
South Terrebonne (1-7 overall, 1-2 in District 7-4A) took control of the game and never looked back. Brett Franks put the Gators on the scoreboard with a 13-yard run for a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Gators turned to the big play to extend their lead to 14-0. Quarterback Chris Duplantis hooked up with Johnathan Smith on a 68-yard touchdown pass for the two-score lead.
Despite scoring only four points (two safeties) in its first two district games, Morgan City (4-4, 0-3) refused to give up. Kedrick Scott put the Tigers on the scoreboard with a 1-yard touchdown run for a 14-7 game.
But South Terrebonne quickly answered Morgan City’s touchdown as Kaleb Voisin scored on an 8-yard run to increase the Gators’ lead to 21-7.
The Tigers answered as they scored before halftime to make it a seven-point game. Abram Hartley connected with Makye Richard on a 3-yard touchdown pass to cut the Gators’ lead to 21-14 at halftime.
Holding a seven-point lead, South Terrebonne turned to its defense to take control of the game. The Gators responded and kept Morgan City off the scoreboard and sealed their first win of the season.
“The defensive coaches made some good adjustments at halftime,” Curlin said. “We switched to a different coverage on their receivers, and it was more effective. Once we took that away from them, they didn’t have too much left.”
The Gators iced the game in the fourth quarter when Louis Blanchard scored on a 1-yard run for a commanding 28-14 lead. Blanchard led South Terrebonne’s rushing attack with 12 carries for 73 yards and a score.
South Terrebonne finished with 306 yards of total offense (223 rushing, 83 passing). Franks added 11 carries for 60 yards and a score, while Duplantis completed 2-of-3 passes for 83 yards and a score.
Morgan City finished with 212 yards of total offense (78 rushing, 134 passing). Scott led the Tigers with 15 carries for 40 yards and a touchdown. Hartley completed 9-of-19 passes for 134 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions and Richard had five catches for 124 yards and a score.
