Thomas Jefferson knocks off Morgan City in five games
No. 18 seed Thomas Jefferson upset No. 15 seed Morgan City High School 3-2 (25-22, 19-25, 25-13, 22-25, 13-15) in Division III prep volleyball bi-district action Thursday.
While Morgan City took the first set, 25-22, Thomas Jefferson responded with a 25-19 win in the second set.
Morgan City came back with a win in the third set, 25-13, before Thomas Jefferson took the final two games, 25-22, 15-13.
While she said her team played well at times, Morgan City head coach Christy Theriot said her squad had too many unforced errors and were not consistent enough to secure the match.
“Thomas Jefferson did not give up,” Theriot said. “They kept the ball in play and made fewer mistakes than we did.”
Dajone Baker had 10 kills and 19 digs to lead Thomas Jefferson, while DaeJa Veal had eight kills and seven blocks.
Other top contributors included Danielle Sullen, 28 assists; Alyssa McGuire, 19 digs; and Symone Killibrew, two aces.
Morgan City had nine aces, 47 kills, six blocks, 35 assists and 114 digs in the loss.
Jaiveianna Jones had three aces, 19 kills, four blocks, one assist and 10 digs for Morgan City, while Kennedy Hebert had four kills, one block and 37 digs.
Other top contributors included Brandi Ingram, 27 digs; Cecily Feliciano, one ace, three kills, 18 assists and 14 digs; Karley Guidry, two aces, one kill, 15 assists and 12 digs; Alexandra Thompson, 10 kills, one block and four digs; and Dwanna LeBeau, two aces, nine kills, one assist and nine digs.
Thursday’s contest was the final one for Ingram and Jones, Morgan City’s lone seniors.
“Brandi and Jai are our only two seniors,” Theriot said. “Both stayed on the court for most of the games. Both were influential on setting the tone for each match. I wish them the best of luck.”
Morgan City concludes its season with a 12-21 mark, while Thomas Jefferson improves to 23-15. The Jaguars will continue play in the regional round Monday against No. 2 seed Ursuline Academy, who received a first-round bye.
