Tigers look to remain undefeated
Morgan City High School will look to continue its best start since the 2012 season when the squad hosts North Central Friday.
The Tigers, who defeated Sophie B. Wright 6-0 a week ago, enter Friday’s contest 2-0 for the first time since 2012 when the squad started the season 4-0 en route to a 4-5 season.
Morgan City coach Scott Tregle exuded confidence about his team’s chances of continuing its perfect season this week.
North Central enters this week 0-2 after suffering consecutive losses to South Cameron (55-6) and Centerville (38-6) in the first two weeks of the season.
Tregle said the visitors from St. Landry Parish don’t have a lot of depth, and he doesn’t think they will be able to keep pace with Morgan City along the offensive and defensive lines for very long.
“They don’t have a lot of depth,” Tregle said. “Small team, but they play hard. They’re not a real, real good team. I already made up in my mind and the coaching (staff’s mind) that everybody’s going to play on Friday night. Not to sound conceited, but we have this game scheduled to kind of give our kids some experience, give … starters a little break in this part of the season. It’s kind of a game that you like to get on your schedule like a lot of the colleges do like LSU schedules McNeese or Nicholls or something like that just to kind of get the starters in but then get your other guys in a develop some depth for later on in the season, and I think that’s what this type of game’s going to be.”
North Central runs a spread offense, while on the other side of the ball, the team operates out of a 50 defense.
Key players for the squad include quarterback Dontariuos Joseph and running back/defensive backs Anthony Hungerford and Wilshawn Williams.
In Morgan City’s win last week, the Tigers limited Sophie B. Wright to 82 yards of total offense. This season, the Tigers have surrendered just 96.5 yards per contest.
The Tigers made several stops of Sophie B. Wright a week ago to preserve the victory.
Offensively, Morgan City hasn’t generated a ton of offense this season, averaging just 207.5 yards through two games this season.
“We definitely have to develop some type of passing game,” Tregle said.
Tregle said the squad has had wide receivers open, but they have just dropped passes or the passes haven’t been on the mark.
“We actually practice passing probably 50 percent or more of the practice, but in the game, we’re just not executing,” Tregle said. “I think the big thing of it is our lack of experience and our youth.”
Through the air, quarterback Abram Hartley has completed 5 of 17 passes for 95 yards and one score this season.
Morgan City’s Wing T offense naturally is led by its ground attack. Malik Phillips leads the squad with 20 carries for 131 yards and two touchdowns, while Kedrick Scott has toted the football 33 times for 112 yards and Ethan Scioneaux, 13 carries for 76 yards.
Phillips scored the team’s lone touchdown a week ago on the Tigers’ opening possession of the game with a 10-yard run.
Friday’s game will begin at 7 p.m.
