Morgan City swept Berwick in parish hoops jamboree action Thursday at West St. Mary.
Morgan City won 30-14 in girls’ action, while Morgan City topped Berwick 35-25 in boys’ action, both in abbreviated contests.
In the girls’ contest, Morgan City broke open a close game about halfway through the first half and took a 15-7 lead at the half en route to the victory.
Morgan City was led in scoring by Laqwajhia Bourgeois with 12 points, while Elicia Dorsey added five and Alisha Singleton, four.
“We looked a little frazzled at the beginning, but one thing that I told them that this would be a good opportunity for them to practice the plays that we’ve done, practice the defense, practice the press stuff that we’ve done, and I think I lot of them took control,” Clark said.
She also credited her bench for their play.
Moving forward, she said her team would be working on executing better and being more aggressive on defense.
“But that’s every team (right now),” she said.
Brittany Boudreaux led Berwick with six points, while Mickenzie Reed had four points and Asia Jackson, three.
Berwick coach Heather Blanchard said she thought her team played better than last year, noting they didn’t graduate any players.
“Hopefully the more that the girls learn the plays, the better we’ll get,” she said.
In the boys’ contest, Morgan City never trailed and took a 20-13 lead into halftime.
Jaylen Jones and Lloyd Singleton each had 10 points for Morgan City, while Tywayn Walker had eight, Deondre Walker, four; Keyshawn Marshall, two; and Makye Richard, one.
“I thought we played pretty good, especially our first five,” Morgan City coach Brandon Harden said. “We got to get a little bit better in transition, do some small things better. We need somebody to step up on the bench. We got to have better role players coming off the bench for us, especially getting deep into the game.”
Berwick was led in scoring by Kenan Jones with seven points, while Audwin Williams and Larenz Clark each scored five. Other scorers included Tysin Meads with four and Donald Tillman and Tre’ Matthews each with two.
“We have a young team that will get better and better as the season goes on,” Berwick coach Sean Comeaux said. “They are working extremely hard every day. We only had four practices to prepare for the jamboree, and the kids fought hard. We have to eliminate all of the turnovers to be able to be successful, and we can't miss 13 free throws and expect to win a game. I did see how athletic our team is as a whole and look forward to coaching these great kids as the season goes on. As they get experience, they will grow and learn from their mistakes.”
Harden also had high praise for Comeaux and his squad.
“I’ve been around this area for 20-something years and this (is) probably the best Berwick team I’ve seen since I’ve actually been watching basketball, so that’s a credit to him (Comeaux) and his guys,” Harden said.
