Tigers upset Teurlings, 2-0

Staff Report

The Morgan City High School soccer team pulled off an early season upset with a 2-0 victory against Teurlings Catholic.
Teurlings entered Saturday’s matchup ranked No. 7 in the preseason poll released by the Louisiana High School Soccer Coaches Association. Morgan City received six votes in the poll.
“Yes, it's still early but knowing the talent that Teurlings has, this 2-0 win was a great one for us,” Morgan City coach Trevor Patterson said. “Both teams played great ball.”
Patterson said he felt his team had the “edge” in the first half.
The Tigers got on the scoreboard near halftime when Carlos Calderon connected with Wilmer Lopez on a through ball and Lopez scored.
In the second half, Patterson said his team came out strong.
“Our boys wanted this win, and it showed,” Patterson said. “Our intensity truly picked up, and we out possessed them.”
Twenty-five minutes into the second half, the Tigers scored again when Mario Sanchez netted a goal.
On the play, Teurlings’ goalie kicked the ball and Sanchez, returned it from 40 yards away and it bounced over the goalie’s head for a goal.
“It was one of those (highlight) goals that you would see on ‘goals of the week’,” Patterson said.
Morgan City’s boys (2-0) will not return to action until the Copa tournament Dec. 5.
Meanwhile, Morgan City’s girls (0-1) will resume action Tuesday when it travels to face St. Michael the Archangel at 5:30 p.m.
