Tigers win key contest against Vandebilt Catholic, 52-37

The Morgan City High School Tigers picked up a key District 7-4A victory Friday with a 52-37 win against Vandebilt Catholic.
The win not only kept the Tigers’ district title hopes alive, but certainly helps them as they continue to jockey for postseason seeding.
With the win, the Tigers and the Terriers are now 5-2 in district behind 6-1 Ellender.
If Morgan City (15-8) defeats Assumption today in their 6 p.m. contest in Napoleonville and Vandebilt upsets Ellender Tuesday, all three teams will conclude district play with identical 6-2 marks.
In Friday’s win, Jaylen Jones led Morgan City with 17 points, while Tywaun Walker had 11 points.
Other scorers for the Tigers included Brady Fryou, eight; Abram Hartley and Deondre Walker, five points each; Lloyd Singleton, four; and Makye Richard, two points.
Patterson routs E.D. White
Patterson High School entered Friday’s contest against E.D. White in Thibodaux in a pivotal District 9-3A contest to stay in contention for the district title.
The Lumberjacks got the upper hand among the two schools in a big way with a 76-38 victory.
“I was very proud of the guys,” Patterson coach Ryan Taylor said. “They played the most complete game of the season. They were focused and in sync with each other on both sides of the floor all night. We made the extra pass and found open guys who knocked shots down. This was a huge performance on the road against a good team.”
Patterson took a 22-6 lead after the first quarter, led 43-20 at the half and 61-34 after three quarters.
With the win, the Lumberjacks improve to 5-1 in district play, while E.D. White slipped to 4-3. Donaldsonville still remains in contention for the district crown with a 5-2 mark.
Donaldsonville will close its regular season Tuesday at home in district against Franklin, while Patterson (16-6) has two district games remaining — home contests against Berwick Tuesday and Friday against Franklin.
In Patterson’s win against E.D. White, Kenneth Washington led Patterson with 15 points while Taylan Grogan added 13.
Other scorers for Patterson included Jordan Butler and Mykel Jones, nine points each; Daylon Charlot and Nehemiah Augustus, eight points apiece; Malik Garrett, seven; Tyric Garrett, three; and Devontre Richard and Khyri Harris, two points each.
Patterson’s contest Tuesday against Berwick will feature just a varsity game that will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Lafayette Christian
defeats Central Catholic
Lafayette Christian used a big third-quarter surge to lift it past Central Catholic 89-59 in District 7-1A action in Lafayette Friday.
While the Eagles trailed just 44-37 at the half, the home standing Knights went on a 28-8 scoring outburst in the third period to take a 72-45 lead after three quarters en route to the win.
Despite the lopsided loss, the Eagles had four players reach double figures, led by 12 points from Stefano Guarisco.
Other double-digit scorers for the Eagles included Jalen Johnson with 11 points, and Samarick Paul and Charlie Solar with 10 points each.
Other scorers for the Eagles included Elijah Swan, seven points; Demarcus Mitchell, three points; and Tanner Wiggins, Matt Vorenkamp and Blake Byrne, two points apiece.
Central Catholic (12-12 overall, 8-3 in district) will return to action today when it hosts Ascension Catholic in nondistrict action. Only varsity boys will play with tip set for 6 p.m.
Berwick falls to Donaldsonville
The Berwick Panthers fell at home to Donaldsonville Thursday, 56-49, in District 9-3A action.
The Panthers committed 28 turnovers in the loss.
Donald Tillman led the Panthers with 16 points and added two rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Other top contributors for the Panthers included Audwin Williams, nine points, two rebounds and two steals; Kenan Jones, eight points, six rebounds, one assist and one steal; Silton Span, eight points, two assists, one steal; Tysin Meads, two points, 12 rebounds and one steal; Brandon Naverro, two points, one rebound and two assists; and Cody Roberie, two points and one rebound.
Berwick (10-14, 1-5) will return to action Tuesday when it travels to face Patterson.
