Patterson High School dominated a sloppy first-half in the season opener by both teams during its contest with Central Lafourche Friday, taking a 12-0 lead into halftime.
Class 5A Central Lafourche came roaring back in the second half, however, scoring 22 unanswered points en route to a 22-12 victory.
Central Lafourche scored on its first three second-half drives, all through the air. Central Lafourche quarterback Jake Allemand connected with wide receiver Gage Bourg for touchdowns on the Trojans’ first two drives and Kenneth Poindexter on the third drive.
Allemand completed 13 of 23 passes for 176 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.
His top two receivers were Bourg, who hauled in five catches for 69 yards and two touchdowns, and Poindexter, who totaled four catches for 56 yards and one score.
Central Lafourche drove 75 yards in seven plays to open the third quarter on a drive capped by a 28-yard pass from Allemand to Bourg with 9:15 remaining in the third quarter. Allemand’s two-point conversion pass to Poindexter was good to cut the Patterson lead to 12-8.
After stopping Patterson on fourth down on its next drive, Central Lafourche used a seven-play, 44-yard drive to score its next touchdown. The drive was capped by a 10-yard pass from Allemand to Bourg with 2:13 remaining in the third quarter. The extra point was good for a 15-12 Central Lafourche lead.
While Patterson moved the ball to the Central Lafourche 27 on its next drive, the drive stalled.
Central Lafourche responded with an eight-play, 73-yard drive capped by a 24-yard pass from Allemand to Poindexter with 7:18 remaining in the game.
While Patterson moved the ball into Central Lafourche territory on its final two drives, Patterson couldn’t muster any points.
Patterson quarterback Dillan Giandelone was sacked on fourth down from the Trojans’ 42 with 4:55 remaining on the first drive.
The final Patterson drive began at the Central Lafourche 20 after a fourth-down snap sailed past Central Lafourche’s punter for a 28-yard loss with a little less than 3 minutes remaining in the ball game.
While Giandelone’s first pass into the end zone appeared complete, it was ruled incomplete on the play in which a Patterson and Central Lafourche player both went for the ball.
On second down, Giandelone’s pass was intercepted and Central Lafourche ran out the clock.
Giandelone led the Patterson offense as he completed 8 of 18 passes for 125 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. He also rushed 21 times for 87 yards.
In the first half, Patterson turned the ball over three times, losing the ball twice via fumbles and Giandelone was intercepted late in the half.
Neither team could get the ball in the end zone in the first quarter, but Patterson finally got on the scoreboard in the second period when Giandelone connected with Jordan Butler on a 34-yard pass in the end zone. On the play, Butler caught the ball in double coverage with 9:58 remaining in the first half. The two-point pass failed, and Patterson led 6-0.
Butler led Patterson’s receivers with four catches for 85 yards and a score.
Patterson’s second touchdown was set up later in the quarter when senior John Brooks intercepted Allemand and returned the ball to the Central Lafourche 30.
The Lumberjacks didn’t need long to make the Trojans pay for the miscue as the squad completed a three-play, 30-yard drive with a 15-yard run by Daijon Richard with 5:24 remaining. Patterson’s two-point run failed, and the Lumberjacks led 12-0.
Richard rushed 13 times for 57 yards and a score in the loss.
Patterson totaled 280 yards of offense (155 rushing and 125 passing).
Defensively, Patterson limited Central Lafourche to just 245 yards of offense (69 rushing and 176 passing).
Patterson will return to action Friday when it takes on its second straight Class 5A opponent, Hahnville, at 7 p.m. at the Sugardome at Patterson High.
Central Lafourche will travel to face Vandebilt Catholic.
