West St. Mary beats Jeanerette Tigers 34-30

BALDWIN _ West St. Mary managed to post their first win of the season while also winning their Homecoming games on Friday following a 34-30 District 5-2A victory over the Jeanerette Tigers here at the West St. Mary Wolfpack Stadium.
West St. Mary (1-3, 1-0) built up an early 20-0 lead over Jeanerette much to the delight of the homecoming crowd.
West St. Mary’s KuJuan Biggles returned a fumble recovery 65 yards for the game’s first score at 9:59 of the opening quarter.
A short time later, Biggles recovered another fumble, setting up a 27-yard air strike from Cameron Blake to Daylon Richards, giving the Wolfpack a 12-0 lead. West St. Mary converted on the two-point conversion as the Wolfpack sailed ahead by a 14-0 margin with 8:46 remaining in the first quarter.
West St. Mary extended its lead to 20-0 when Jason Pierre plowed through on a one-yard score in the second quarter.
The Wolfpack _ which earned its first win of the season _ went ahead by a 26-0 margin when Kharee Lockley raced 83 yards for a score in the third quarter.
Jeanerette fought back with touchdown runs from Shonathon Sparrow and Tyreese Batiste to trail West St. Mary by a 26-14 margin late in the third quarter.
Lockley pushed the Wolfpack ahead by a 34-14 margin early in the fourth quarter on a three-yard score.
Jeanerette’s Batiste and Ahmad Mitchell pulled the Tigers within four points of the Wolfpack with late-game scores but it was too little, too late as the Wolfpack held on for the 34-30 District 5-2A and Homecoming win.
West St. Mary tallied 237 yards on the night while Jeanerette managed 408 yards.
West St. Mary (1-3, 1-1) will travel to face the Opelousas Catholic Vikings on Friday in District 5-2A action.
VERMILION CATHOLIC 40, HANSON MEMORIAL 18
The Vermilion Catholic Eagles rallied past the Hanson Memorial Tigers 40-18 Friday in District 7-1A action at McCloskey Field.
Hanson (1-4, 0-2) will travel to take on the Centerville Bulldogs on Friday in District 5-2A action.
Hanson’s Luke Rodriguez scored on touchdown receptions of 47 and 30 yards along with 5-yard run to spark the Tigers.
VCHS (2-3, 2-0) opened the scoring with a 13-6 first quarter margin with touchdowns when Ashton Washington scored on a fumble recovery and Kalix Broussard added a 6-yard run.
Rodriguez gave the Tigers a short-lived 6-0 lead after hauling in a 47-yard touchdown pass from Mason Mendoza.
Rodriguez pulled down a 30-yard pass from Mendoza in the second quarter, helping the Tigers pull within one point of the Eagles at 13-12.
Vermilion Catholic’s J. T. Lege fired a 31-yard touchdown pass to Gage Broussard, sending the Eagles ahead by a 20-12 margin at halftime.
VCHS added three touchdowns by Matthew Fontenot, Broussard and Alex LeBlanc in the second half to build a 40-12 advantage over the Tigers.
Rodriguez later scored on a 5-yard run, scoring his third touchdown of the night as the Tigers fell to the Eagles by a final score of 40-18.
Hanson (1-4, 0-2) will travel to face Centerville (1-4, 0-2) on Friday in District 5-2A action.
E. D. WHITE 42, FRANKLIN 16
The E. D. White Cardinals rolled past the Franklin Hornets 42-16 in District 8-3A action Friday at J. C. Dry Stadium.
The Cardinals (1-4, 1-2) built up an early 35-0 advantage en route to the 42-16 win over the Hornets (1-4, 0-2).
Franklin’s Avontre Perro scored the Hornets’ first touchdown on a two-yard run of which he followed with the two-point conversion in late in the third quarter.
Perro’s scoring jaunt was set up by a clutch run by Zariq Perry.
With 1:09 remaining in the third quarter, Franklin trailed E. D. White by a 35-8 margin.
Franklin (1-4, 0-2) will travel to take on district front-runner Kaplan (5-0, 2-0) on Friday in league play.
