West St. Mary loses heartbreaker to Morgan City

BALDWIN _ Taaj Davis scored on a steal and a layin with 2.0 seconds remaining lifting the Morgan City Tigers to a 55-53 win over the West St. Mary Wolfpack here Monday at the West St. Mary High School Gym.
West St. Mary (0-2) grabbed a 53-49 lead with 43.1 showing on the clock with Duante Charles connected on both ends of a one-and-one.
Morgan City went on a 6-0 run during the final 37.5 seconds to pull out the come-from-behind victory.
With West St. Mary clinging to the 53-49 lead, the Tigers collected six straight points on identical steal and lay-in baskets from Jared Singleton, Deondre Walker and Davis to wipe out a four-point deficit and replace it with a pulsating 55-53 win.
West St. Mary _ which led by a slim 27-25 margin at intermission _ knotted the game at 44-44 with 3:30 remaining in the heated battle.
WSM’s Chris Snowden scored on a steal and lay-in of his own, tying the game at 44-all while turning up the intensity of the hotly-contested battle.
Morgan City’s Grogan later broke knot by connecting on the second of two freebies with 2:54 showing on the clock.
Charles, the game’s top scorer with 25 points, scored on a basket and the subsequent free throw to tie the game at 47-47 with 2:10 showing.
Charles later scored on a long trey, putting the Wolfpack ahead by a 50-47 margin with 1:20 blinking on the clock.
Tywan Polidore made good on a free throw, sending the Wolfpack ahead by a 51-47 margin.
Charles returned to the free throw line and hit both ends of the 1-and-1, sending the Wolfpack out to a 53-49 lead.
During the final 43.1 seconds, Morgan City cashed in on a 6-0 run, rallying for the comeback 55-53 victory.
West St. Mary’s Charles led all scorers with 25 points while Chris Snowden also finished in double digits with 12 points.
Singleton led the Tigers in scoring with 17 points while Grogan finished with 10 points.
West St. Mary will return to action on Wednesday in the annual Teurlings Catholic Tournament in Lafayette.
