Zachary wins 5A crown

Zachary beat John Ehret 46-12 on Saturday night to capture the school’s first football state title in the Louisiana Class 5A prep state football championship in New Orleans.
With less than 30 seconds to go in the half, the second-seeded Broncos (14-1) took the lead for good at 13-12 when Lindsey Scott found Doug Coleman for a 17-yard touchdown pass.
Scott added a pair of third-quarter touchdowns — a 26-yard keeper and an 81-yard pass to Coleman — to push Zachary’s lead to 27-12.
No. 9 seed John Ehret took the early lead at 6-0 after on Donte Green’s 18-yard touchdown reception. Zachary tied the game 6-all when Scott connected with Shyron White for a 69-yard touchdown.
Midway through the second quarter, John Ehret again took a touchdown lead on Dejon Harris’ 4-yard touchdown run.
John Ehret (12-3) was seeking the school’s first football state championship in 30 years.
Neville repeats
as 4A champs
Neville captured its second consecutive state championship and fourth title since 2009 with a 45-26 win over Edna Karr in the Louisiana Class 4A state championship game Saturday night.
In a rematch of the 2011 and 2012 state championship games, Edna Karr (9-5) took an early 7-0 lead when Aldon Clark connected with Tyrin Ralph for a 2-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Ralph added another score on the first possession of the second quarter, taking it in from 17 yards out, for a 14-7 lead.
Neville (14-0) scored the final 14 points of the second quarter, on a 23-yard touchdown run by Donald Jenkins and a 5-yard touchdown pass from Christopher Haynes to Robert Williams, to make it 21-14 at the half.
Jaiden Cole found Quintin Guice for a 46-yard touchdown pass to put Neville on the board at 7-all.
The title for Neville, a powerhouse program out of northeastern Louisiana, is the school’s 12th championship since 1955. Edna Karr, meanwhile, was seeking its third state championship since the 1993 season.
Lutcher routs St. James for 3A title
Jontre Kirklin’s running and passing helped Lutcher defeat St. James, 41-14, for the Louisiana Class 3A state football championship Saturday in New Orleans.
St. James scored first with a nine-yard pass from Lowell Narcisse to Arron McKenney.
Lutcher (14-1) answered with an 11-play, 68-yard drive capped by Kirklin’s six-yard touchdown run.
Kirklin connected with senior wide receiver Tharrin Maddie for a pair of touchdowns passes. The first was from 22 yards out. The second was a 32-yard score with less than two minutes to go in the first half.
Kirklin’s 27-yard touchdown run on the opening possession of the second half put the game out of reach at 29-8.
The victory gave Lutcher’s Bulldogs their seventh Class 3A crown, and their first since 2008.
Making their first state championship appearance since 2007, St. James ended their season 11-4.
Kinder wins 2A title
A year after falling just short in the Class 2A title game, three rushing touchdowns by Taylor Johnson proved to be the difference for the Kinder Yellow Jackets as they defeated Mangham, 35-20 to capture the Class 2A Louisiana state football championship on Friday night.
A game that saw five scoring drives go at least nine plays, Kinder (14-1) got on the scoreboard on their opening possession on an 11-yard touchdown run by Johnson which capped a 10-play 64-yard drive.
Mangham (10-5) immediately answered with a 13-yard touchdown run by Abdulla Rhone to tie the game 7-7. Rhone’s touchdown run wrapped up a 14-play, 70-yard drive by the Dragons.
Up 13-7 after a 4-yard touchdown run by Johnson, the junior running back took it in again for the Yellow Jackets, this time from 6 yards out to make it 19-7 as Kinder missed two consecutive extra point attempts.
Mangham would get as close as 26-20 in the third quarter on Jakarie Nichols second rushing touchdown, this time from 1-yard out, but the Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 29-20 at the end of the third quarter on a 26-yard field goal by Raul Barrera.
The 2A title for Kinder is its first since the 2013 season while Mangham was seeking its first state championship since 1956.
Kentwood rolls past Haynesville for 1A title
Two touchdown passes from Shyheim Carter to Jaleel Hampton proved to be the difference as Kentwood defeated Haynesville, 40-7 in the Class 1A Louisiana high school football championship on Friday night.
After fumbling on their second play from scrimmage, the Kentwood (13-1) defense was able to stop Haynesville on fourth down, forcing a turnover.
Six plays later, Carter connected with Carter for their first touchdown, from 8 yards out, to make it 7-0 Kangaroos.
Tied 7-7, the Kangaroo defense again forced Haynesville to punt and on the ensuing play Carter found Raymontre Palmer for a 29-yard touchdown, giving Kentwood the lead for good at 14-7.
Carter later connected with Hampton again in the second quarter, this time from 12 yards out to push the lead to 21-7.
Seeking their 18th state championship in school history, third-seeded Haynesville finished the season 11-3. The Golden Tornadoes lone score of the game came in the first quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by Keandre Harris.
The state championship for Kentwood is the fifth in school history and their first since 1998.
