‘Blooms galore’ for Bayou Vista Garden Club

Gary Bullock, licensed florist, manager and designer at Town and Country Florist, presented a demonstration on the principles and elements of flower design by creating a mass floral design during the October meeting of the Bayou Vista Garden Club.
The arrangement included a base of magnolia leaves accented with stripped magnolia branches with acorns, Bells of Ireland, variegated and green privet, solidago, and yellow, bronze, and crimson mums. The arrangement was donated as a door prize by Town and Country Florist.
Bullock is the vice president of the Louisiana State Florist Association.
Kim Alcina, environmental awareness chairwoman, continued the upcycling theme of attracting and feeding birds in the community. Alcina prepared bird feeders made of orange cups filled with oatmeal and peanut butter and strings of partially dehydrated orange slices.
A member plant exchange was conducted by Janice Verret. Members identified botanical and common names of plants and included cultivation, propagation, and maintenance information.
Crystal Marcel and Jo Ann Ryan served as hostesses. Ryan created the topiary design, Harvest Moon, using alstroemeria, leather leaf fern, nandina leaves and berries, Hawthorne leaves, and curly Boston fern.
The “Blooms Galore” recipient was Ann Breaux and the door prize winner was Dawn Thomason.
The next meeting of BVGC will be at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Bayou Vista Community Center. New members are always welcome.
