Bayou Vista Garden Club holds November ‘Make ‘n Take’ Program

“Fab Frugal Frame Finishes” was the “Make ‘n Take” program presented by member Kim Alcina during Bayou Vista Garden Club’s November meeting.
Alcina guided members through a distressing technique as members painted recycled picture frames. Members made chalk paint by mixing plaster of Paris, water-based paint and water. Projects also required light sanding and waxing for the distressed finish.
Several sample projects completed by Alcina were displayed. Alcina has taken an interior decorating correspondence course and has always enjoyed crafts. She has turned her current upcycling projects into a hobby by painting furniture and repurposing her unique “finds.” She displays them on her Facebook page, “Pieces of Salvation.”
Alcina, environmental awareness chairman, continued the upcycling theme of attracting and feeding birds in the community by using recycled cardboard paper rolls and coating them with peanut butter and seeds to hang as bird feeders.
Jean Chauvin, horticulture awareness chairman, exhibited a Red Aglaonema (Aglaonema Rojo) plant. The variegated foliage requires more light than the darker green varieties. She said the plants need thorough watering, good drainage, fertilizing during the growing season and do not tolerate temperatures below 65 F.
Nancy Marcel and Carol Smith served as hostesses. Marcel created the fall design, “Pumpkin Patch,” using Daisy Pom mums, leatherleaf fern, curly willow and nandina.
The door prize winner was Dawn Thomason. The next meeting of BVGC will be the Christmas Social on Dec. 4.
