Bayou Vista Garden Club wins state, regional awards

Bayou Vista Garden Club’s May meeting included a progressive meal and garden tour at the homes of club members.
President Donna Bucci offered salad and hors d’oeuvres; Kim Alcina, assisted by Gloria Roy, presented the entree; and Dawn Thomason provided dessert.
Horticulture hints, gardening tips and floral design displays were shared by the hostesses.
Bucci announced awards presented at the Louisiana Garden Club Federation Convention in Vidalia. In noncompetitive awards, Bayou Vista Garden Club received Garden Club Achievement — gold seal with ribbon; Horticulture Honor Roll — gold seal; Arbor Day — certificate of merit; and Special Conservation Award.
In the competitive awards category, Bayou Vista Garden Club was presented with the first-place award for Publicity Press Book (small clubs). At the Deep South Region Convention held in Tunica, Mississippi, and representing six states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee), Bayou Vista Garden Club was again awarded first place in Publicity Press Book.
In other club business, Alcina was announced as winner of the club’s membership drive. Buddy Short of the Acadiana Hibiscus Society will name a new hibiscus with a name chosen by Alcina. She selected KimmiE’s JoJos. Bucci presented Alcina with a picture of the hibiscus.
The club is now on summer hiatus. The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Bayou Vista Community Center.
