Breast Cancer Awareness Brunch slated Oct. 5

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Phi Rho Omega Chapter, will host its Breast Cancer Awareness Brunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Alex P. Allain Memorial Library in Franklin.
Under the direction of Brenda Paul, for the past 17 years the members of the sorority have been educating women about the importance of early detection and regular mammograms in reducing the risk of detecting breast cancer too late, according to the Phi Rho Omega press release.
Dr. Keyna Whitney will speak to the group about risk factors, screening options, treatment options and the efficacy of each. Also to be discussed is the importance of getting to a physician immediately when any changes are detected.
This year’s survivor testimonial will be given by Violet Thompson. She will share her story of detection and of battling the disease for a second time. Her story reflects strength and hope, the release said.
All guests will receive a souvenir bag containing important information from the American Cancer Society and items promoting National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Phi Rho Omega presents the brunch as a free public service. The library is located at 206 Iberia St.
Teche Action Clinic and the Chapter will be donating free mammograms which will be awarded by drawing.
