BATON ROUGE — Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser and the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board will host the Louisiana Seafood Cook-Off on May 28 in New Orleans.
Eleven chefs from across Louisiana will compete for the title of King of Louisiana Seafood. Now in its ninth year, this competition takes place at the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience in the Ernest M. Morial Convention Center.
“Seafood is a part of our culture and has created a culinary identity for Louisiana unlike any other state,” Nungesser said.
This year’s chef competitors are: Bradley Andries, Sac-a-lait (New Orleans); Brian Bajon, Barcadia (New Orleans); Lyle Broussard, Jack Daniel’s Bar and Grill (Lake Charles); Ryan Gaudet, Spahr’s Seafood (Des Allemands); Celeste Gill, Cooking Up Louisiana Treasure (Baton Rouge); Frederick Ngo, Jimmy’s Seafood & Steak (Bossier City); Blake Phillips, Restaurant Sage (Monroe); Mark Quitney, Roux Bistro (New Orleans); Nathan Richard, Kingfish Kitchen & Cocktails (New Orleans); Amy Sins, Langlois (New Orleans); and Scott Varnedoe, Restaurant IPO (Baton Rouge).
The winner will move on to compete against chefs from across the nation in the Great American Seafood Cook-Off to be held Aug. 6, at the Louisiana Restaurant Association Show.
Hosts for this year’s competition are national celebrity chef Jeff Henderson, host of Flip My Food, and one of Louisiana’s favorite chefs and 2011 King of Louisiana Seafood Chef Cory Bahr of Monroe.
The competition is held at the NOWFE’s Grand Tasting, which opens its doors to the public at 6 p.m. The King of Louisiana Seafood will be crowned at 8:30 p.m.
“That’s when the real fun begins,” said the current King of Louisiana Seafood, Chef Michael Brewer of Manning’s. “Representing Louisiana Seafood this past year has been an honor and a pleasure.”
Those purchasing tickets, $175 plus fees, to the Grand Tasting will be able to watch the competition. Information on tickets can be found at NOWFE.com.
