Ghirardi provides magical entertainment at AARP meeting

On Feb. 3, St. Mary AARP held its monthly meeting and dinner at the St. Mary Senior Citizens Center in Morgan City. Twin City Funeral Home and Patterson State Bank sponsored the meal of chili with crackers and king cake. AARP cooks were Floyd and Shirley Hymel, Carol and Hubert Francis, and Sterling and Pat Fryou.
Treasurer AnnEtta Lombardo began the meeting with a prayer and Hubert Francis sang the national anthem. Vice President Floyd Hymel chaired the meeting. After dinner, John Smilie of Twin City addressed members.
Magician Glenn Ghirardi entertained the crowd with a mixture of comedy and magic. Volunteering to assist Ghirardi was Gene and Mary Gaudet.
Members were reminded that even though the membership drive is over, anyone age 50 and over can join and membership can be renewed at any time. Cost is $12 for 2 years. Membership provides entry to monthly meetings that include dancing, bingo, a meal and many other activities.
Other benefits of joining St. Mary AARP can be found online at www.stmaryaarp.com.
The organization held its annual Mardi Gras ball on Feb. 8 so the monthly dance will not be held in February. AARP hosts bingo every Wednesday morning that is open to the public. Bingo starts at 11 a.m. with a small break for lunch. All money collected is awarded as prizes.
In an attempt to go “green,” St. Mary AARP asks members to receive its monthly newsletter via email if possible or view it at the organization’s website. Click on the Contact section on the website or call 985-384-2277 to opt out of the mailed newsletter.
The next AARP meeting will be March 3. Meal sponsor is Greg Aucoin. White beans and rice will be served.
