Jeanerette Museum hosts talk on history of Italians in Louisiana

Alan Gauthreaux, author and history instructor, will give audience members a look into the Italian immigrant experience in Louisiana as he speaks about his book, “Italian Louisiana: History, Heritage and Tradition” at 6 p.m. on Sept. 14 at the Jeanerette Museum.
Gauthreaux will discuss the Italian contribution to Louisiana’s culture. Preceding the talk, there will be a brief presentation on the Italians of Jeanerette who operated business establishments during the early 1900s. A book signing will follow Gauthreaux’s talk.
Gauthreaux’s “Dark Bayou: Infamous Louisiana Homicides” is his most recent release (November 2015). He has been praised for making history come alive while exploring man’s dark imagination, according to the Jeanerette Musuem’s news release.
Gauthreaux’s other work, “Italian Louisiana: History, Heritage, and Tradition,” has been well-received not only locally, but in many markets across the United States and recommended reading by the Order of the Sons of Italy in America in January 2015.
His master’s thesis was included in an anthology titled, “Louisiana Legacies: Readings in the History of the Pelican State.” Gauthreaux holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from the University of New Orleans and worked as the National Outreach Coordinator for the National World War II Museum in New Orleans from 2007-09.
Gauthreaux works as an adjunct instructor of history at Nunez Community College and Southern University at Shreveport. His previous works on military history may be found in America’s Civil War magazine, Civil War Illustrated, and crime history in Globe Communications.
