Labbe’ Bayou Vista Garden Club November guest speaker

Sherri Labbe’ was guest speaker for the Bayou Vista Garden Club November meeting. Her presentation, “Design for Two Seasons,” was a demonstration on the principles and elements of flower design by creating a Pot-et-Fleur.
A Pot-et-Fleur consists of a combination of two or more rooted plants, growing in soil or other medium, cut plant material, and other optional components in a decorative container. Fall and winter were the seasons selected and plant material for her two designs included Creeping Jenny, Bird’s-nest fern, dracena, purple statice, orange Asiatic lilies, yellow and red carnations, and poinsettia.
Labbe’, a member of the Terrebonne Garden Club, has earned a Four Star from the National Garden Club by completing all four schools — Flower Show Judges School, Landscape Design School, Garden Study School and Environmental Study School. She is a Louisiana Garden Club Federation Flower Show judge and a consultant in the other three schools.
Kim Alcina, Bayou Vista Garden Club’s environmental awareness chairman, displayed several “upcycling” craft projects she designed utilizing found items which were repurposed for the display and storage of jewelry. Items included old cheese graters, picture frames and a spice rack.
Wildlife Conservation Chairman Nancy Marcel highlighted an October news article from the Louisiana Wildlife Federation which outlined a recommendation from the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission to support changes to the Louisiana Natural and Scenic Rivers Program. “One key proposed change is to prohibit the use of a motor vehicle or other wheeled or tracked vehicle on a designated stream, except for permitted uses and crossings,” the article stated. Jean Chauvin, club horticulture chairman, presented the horticulture exhibit — the jade plant, which she propagated. These succulent plants grow well in containers and like warm, dry conditions found in most homes. Members received handouts on growing and maintaining jade plants.
Hostesses for the meeting were Pam Breaux and Janice Verret. The table centerpiece designed by the hostesses, “Fruits of Fall,” was a basket containing grapefruit, oranges, satsumas, lemons, apples, blue salvia, spiral ginger buds, canna lily stems with seed pods, and foliage from the citrus plants. All of the citrus was from the property of Breaux.
The door prize winner was Verdie Laws.
