Nicholls Reading Council recognizes local winners

The Nicholls State University Reading Council held a Louisiana Reading Association’s Young Authors Contest for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The council serves St. Mary, Assumption, Lafourche, St. John, St. James and Terrebonne parishes to promote literacy.
An Awards Ceremony was held at Julia B. Maitland School in Morgan City to recognize first-place student-author winners. Each student was awarded a trophy, certificate and gift bag. Teachers of the student winners were awarded a certificate for their support of this literacy project.
Winners for Poetry, Fiction and Non-Fiction categories in kindergarten through second grade are Aidan Teague, Isabella Arceneaux, Luis Zuniga, Taylor Lucore, Alicea Franklin, Reece Arceneaux, Jude Hebert, Kailynn Gaudet and Reese Leonard. Teachers: Joy Hebert, Noel Jett, Veronica Governale, Michelle Besse, Felicia Stevens, Jenny Williams, Shelly Suire and Gail Breaux.
Winners for Poetry, Fiction and Non-Fiction categories in third through fifth grade are Braylee Mayon, Brandon Cordero, Kate Bailey, Willie Webb, Eric Calderon, Mia Crooks, Coy Leonard, Winnie Mabile, Gabriela Utra, Maria Arzate, Phu Pham and Alexis Rybiski. Teachers: Lauren Rentrop, Marcia Bergeron, Jackie Wilson, Kerrie Kinkle, Bridget Mabile and Shane White.
M C Bank donated the trophies. Bank representative Frances Dupre was on hand to present the awards. Also on hand were Nicholls Reading Council officers Veronica Governale, president; Katie Hunter, vice president; Kay Arceneaux, secretary; and Monica Governale, treasurer.
