Satchmo SummerFest music announced

NEW ORLEANS — French Quarter Festival announces the complete music schedule for the 14th Annual Satchmo SummerFest. The American jazz festival dedicated to the life, legacy and music of New Orleans’ native son Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, the free Satchmo SummerFest takes place Aug. 1 to 3 on the grounds of the Louisiana State Museum’s Old U.S. Mint.
Two stages will feature more than 40 contemporary and traditional jazz musicians and brass bands, the French Quarter Festival news release stated. Aug. 1, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band makes its Satchmo SummerFest debut. Often credited with revitalizing brass bands in New Orleans and around the world, the group will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2015.
Brass bands will be heard throughout the weekend with performances from PresHall Brass, Treme Brass Band, Original Pinettes, and more. Other artists making their Satchmo SummerFest debut are Joe Lastie, Mario Abney and the Abney Effect, Brass-A-Holics, and the Smoking Time Jazz Club.
Critically acclaimed trombonist, composer, conductor and arranger Wycliffe Gordon will again perform at Satchmo SummerFest. Gordon, an eight-time recipient of the Jazz Journalists Association “Trombonist of the Year” award and DownBeat Magazine’s “Critics Choice Trombonist” two years running, credits Louis Armstrong as a primary influence on his own life in music, the release said.
Yoshio Toyama, the “Satchmo of Japan” will celebrate his love of New Orleans and Armstrong during his festival performance on Aug. 2. Kermit Ruffins, in keeping with tradition, will close out the festival by leading a Trumpet Tribute to Armstrong on Aug. 3. Other festival favorites include John Boutte, Leroy Jones and New Orleans’ Finest, Charmaine Neville, Glen David Andrews, and many more.

About Louis Armstrong
Louis Armstrong was born in New Orleans in an area known as “Back o’ Town.” Throughout his career, he entertained millions — from heads of state and royalty to the kids on his stoop in Corona, N.Y.
Despite his fame, he lived a simple life in a working-class neighborhood. The man known around the world as “Satchmo” was widely recognized as a founding father of jazz — a uniquely American art form. His influence, as an artist and cultural icon, is universal.
