November birthdays and anniversaries were celebrated at the Nov. 4 St. Mary AARP meeting.

St. Mary AARP kicks off annual membership drive

The St. Mary AARP membership drive kickoff was discussed at the organization’s Nov. 4 meeting. The meeting was held at the St. Mary Senior Citizens Center in Morgan City.
New membership and membership renewal is $10 for a two-year term. That price is good through January 2014.
Guest speakers for the meeting were new local doctors at Teche Regional Medical Center. Drs. William Cefalu Jr., an internist, and Jarrett Thurston, an ophthalmologist, introduced themselves and provided a description of their specialties.
Hargrave Funeral Home in Morgan City was the November meal sponsor. The cooking crew of Sterling and Pat Fryou, Floyd and Shirley Hymel, Hubert and Carol Francis, and Jimmy Courvillier prepared chicken and sausage gumbo, and potato salad.
Hargrave representatives also provided a synopsis of the business.
St. Mary AARP Vice President Curtis Leonard presided over the meeting. Announcements included that candidates running for St. Mary AARP officers and the board were all unopposed. An installation ceremony is scheduled for the Dec. 2 meeting.
Other reminders included:
—Starting in January, membership cards will be checked at the door prior to each meeting. Only members will be allowed to attend.
—Every Wednesday is bingo starting at 11 a.m. for members and non-members.
—A Paragon Casino bus trip for members and non-members is Dec. 8. To make a reservation call the St. Mary AARP office at 985-384-2277.
—The meal for the Dec. 2 meeting will be sponsored by Teche Regional Medical Center. It will include roast beef and gravy. Tuneweavers will provide entertainment.
