Sumpter Williams Class of 1966 holds 50-year reunion

The Sumpter Williams High School Class of 1966 celebrated its 50-year reunion July 1-3.
Classmates, spouses and guests had a weekend of activities and fellowship beginning July 1 with a meet and greet at the Clarion Hotel banquet room in Morgan City. The evening was spent reminiscing and exchanging fond memories.
On the morning of July 2, Kenneth Bradford and several male classmates gathered at the Roland Broussard Playground on Adams Street in Morgan City to clean the area as a community service project.
“Morgan City is still our home,” said Emile Washington of Atlanta and Clarence Gray of Houston.
Siracusaville Recreation Building was the venue for the July 2 reunion celebration where everyone gathered for a program, dinner and dancing. In attendance were Paul Bonnee and Albert Foulcard, both former teachers at Sumpter Williams.
Also in attendance were Herman Hartman, a community civic leader, and Morgan City Councilman Ron Bias. Bias presented the class with a proclamation from Mayor Frank Grizzaffi and the City of Morgan City.
On behalf of the 1966 class, Class President Clarence Gray accepted a U.S. flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol on May 30 to commemorate the 50-year reunion. The request to fly the flag at the capitol was made by U.S. Rep. Charles W. Boustany (R-Lafayette).
During the ceremony, Bias was officially inducted into the Sumpter Williams Class of 66 as a Blue Devil. “I have always wanted to be a Blue Devil,” said Bias.
The celebration came to an end on Sunday with a service at Ephesian Baptist Church in Morgan City where classmate, the Rev. Ezekiel Simmons III, is pastor, and lunch at the Clarion Hotel.
