Coroner: Ashton shooting death a homicide

The death of a 52-year-old man, who died after a Dec. 27 shooting and standoff in Ashton, has been ruled a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds.
St. Mary Parish Coroner Dr. F.H. Metz Jr. said Thursday that he preliminarily determined Gayneaux Paul Trahan Jr.’s manner and cause of death.
On Dec. 27, the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office asked state police detectives to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred at the 18800 block of Dumesnil Road in Ashton, according to a state police initial complaint report.
Upon arrival, investigators learned that Derrick Bodin, Trahan and a St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy were shot. All three were transported to area hospitals, the initial report said.
Trahan passed away Dec. 30 at Lafayette General Hospital, according to his obituary.
At 6:10 a.m. Dec. 27, the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call of a possible shooting at a residence on Dumesnil Road in Ashton, according to a sheriff’s office news release.
Upon arrival, deputies located a man with injuries. Deputies were successful in removing the man from the scene, the release said. The injured man was transported to a hospital.
While continuing to secure the scene, deputies were fired upon and took cover, the release said. The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team was activated.
Additional agencies responded to assist including state police, the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office. While the deputies were being removed from the scene, they came under fire again. One St. Mary Parish deputy was injured and transported to a hospital, the release said.
Later in the day, authorities captured the suspect, who was injured and transported to an area hospital for treatment. The sheriff’s office turned over the investigation to state police.
On Jan. 7, the sheriff’s office reported that the deputy who was injured in the shooting had been released from the hospital and was recovering at home. Authorities haven’t released the name of the deputy.
Information on Bodin’s condition has not been released.
Investigators also haven’t publicly identified the suspect in the case.
In an email Wednesday, State Police Trooper Brooks David said the investigation is still ongoing and once the investigation is concluded, the results will be forwarded to the district attorney for review.
