13-year-old Jenerette boy dies in ATV crash on U.S. 90

IBERIA PARISH -- A 13-year-old Jenerette boy was killed while operating a 4-wheeler on U.S. 90 near Darnell Road at 7:47 p.m. Friday, a news release from Louisiana State Police Troop I said.
According to investigating troopers, Benjamin Oliver was driving a 2012 Yamaha four-wheeler east on U.S. 90 Frontage Road. A 2012 GMC SUV, driven by 49-year-old Linda Moreaux of Franklin, was traveling east on U.S. 90, police said. For reasons still under investigation, Oliver traveled through the median which separated the Frontage Road and the highway and was struck by Moreaux’s vehicle, police said.
Oliver was not wearing a helmet and was ejected from the 4-wheeler, police said.
Oliver was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries. Oliver succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital, police said.
Moreaux was wearing a seat belt and was transported to a hospital with minor injuries, police said.
It is unknown if impairment was a factor in this crash; however, routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
The crash remains under investigation.
Troopers remind ATV operators about the importance of wearing a helmet when riding an ATV. Appropriate helmets can help to reduce injuries sustained to riders in the event of a crash.
