A 28-year-old Berwick man was charged Wednesday for the rape of a 16-year-old girl, Berwick Police Chief James Richard said.
—Dean Beranek, 28, of Burchfield Lane in Berwick, was arrested at 10:47 a.m. Wednesday on a warrant for simple rape.
The warrant stems from an investigation that began in July from a report of Beranek having inappropriate relations with and possibly raping a 16-year-old girl, Richard said. Beranek was released on $20,000 bail.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert reported responding to 37 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrests in east St. Mary Parish:
—A juvenile male, 16, of Patterson, was arrested at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday for two counts of battery of a school teacher. A deputy investigating a complaint of a battery at Patterson High School learned that two students were involved in argument that began in the cafeteria. At that time, a third student broke up the verbal altercation and left the cafeteria with the juvenile, Hebert said.
The argument between the two students continued in the gym where two teachers intervened. As the teachers separated the students, the juvenile pushed the teachers in the chest and began swinging his arms at them, Hebert said. The juvenile was released to a guardian pending juvenile court proceedings.
—Chad A. Ross Jr., 21, of the 1700 block of E. Garner Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 12:13 p.m. Wednesday on a warrant for possession of Schedule I synthetic marijuana with intent to distribute. Ross was transported from Assumption Parish to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center in Centerville on the warrant. The warrant stems from an undercover operation during which Ross sold the illegal substance to a narcotics agent at a location in St. Mary Parish. Ross was released on $25,000 bail.
—Edward Jones, 33, of the 100 block of Roussell Street in Patterson, was arrested at 2:30 a.m. today for disturbing the peace, simple battery and on a warrant from Patterson police for simple battery. A deputy responded to a complaint of a disturbance at a residence on Dianne Lane in Patterson.
The deputy learned that Jones went to the residence and began yelling and sounding the horn of his vehicle. When a resident confronted Jones, he pushed the male victim repeatedly in the chest, Hebert said. The deputy also learned that Jones was wanted on the active warrant. Jones was taken to the parish jail and later transferred to another jurisdiction for housing.
—Iriane D. Burks, 22, of the 100 block of Mill Road in Patterson, and Brittany Jones, 21, of the 100 block of Lloyd Lane in Morgan City, were arrested at 5:07 p.m. for theft. A deputy investigating a complaint of an employee theft at a store in Bayou Vista learned that Burks and Jones used receipts from prior transactions to falsify merchandise returns totaling more than $3,000, Hebert said.
Burks and Jones were jailed. Burks was released on a personal surety bond. Jones was transferred to another jurisdiction for housing.
—Gregory Gober Jr., 26, of the 2600 block of Sixth Street in Berwick, was arrested at 10:04 a.m. Wednesday on a warrant for the charges of possession of marijuana second offense and possession of drug paraphernalia. St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office narcotics detectives were notified by Berwick police that Gober was at the Berwick Police Department to turn himself in on the warrant, Hebert said.
The warrant stems from an investigation into illegal drug activity taking place at Gober’s residence. During a search, narcotics detectives located marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Detectives also learned that Gober has a prior conviction for possession of marijuana. Gober was jailed with no bail set.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported the following arrests:
—Corey Delaune, 35, of the 1900 block of Pine Street in Franklin, was arrested at 6:37 p.m. Wednesday on a warrant for simple battery. Delaune was released on $409 bail.
—Justin Clarence Lovell, 21, of the 1600 block of Cherry Street in Patterson, was arrested at 12:30 a.m. today for disturbing the peace intoxicated and disturbing the peace by language. Lovell was jailed on $630 bail.
—Edward D. Jones, 33, of the 100 block of Roussell Lane in Patterson, was arrested at 5:20 a.m. today on a warrant for simple battery. Jones was jailed on $409 bail.
Morgan City Police Chief Michael Banks reported the following arrest:
—Frank Adams, 23, of Morgan City, was arrested at 9:03 a.m. Wednesday on a warrant for failure to appear to pay fines.
Police while on patrol in the area of La. 182 near Redwood Street observed Adams walking in the area. Officers were aware of active warrants for him held by the Morgan City Police Department. Adams was jailed.
