Fire destroyed an abandoned trailer on Chetta Lane Monday while also damaging a residence next door, and firefighters believe someone set the trailer on fire, Morgan City Fire Chief Morris Price said.
The fire department responded to a call from Morgan City police reporting a trailer fire in the 700 block of Chetta Lane in Siracusaville, Price said. When firefighters arrived at 4:48 p.m., the trailer was fully involved in flames.
According to neighbors, the trailer had been dropped off about eight years ago, and, about a year ago, somebody started tearing it apart but never showed back up, Price said.
No utilities were hooked to the trailer so firefighters believe somebody set the trailer on fire, but firefighters do not know whether it was arson or an accident, Price said. The fire destroyed the trailer and damaged the siding of a mobile home next door. According to neighbors, the owner of the trailer lives somewhere in Washington State, Price said. Firefighters cleared the scene and arrived back at the station by 5:52 p.m.
Price planned to call the parish this morning to remove what is left of the trailer so it is no longer a fire hazard. No injuries were reported in the fire, Price said.
