Berwick celebrates life, light and everything old Saturday

A Celebration of Life and Light will be held Saturday in Berwick.
Residents will gather at the Brown House Museum at 10 a.m. to celebrate 217 years of Berwick history before heading to the Southwest Reef Lighthouse to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Everett S. Berry Lighthouse Park.
At the Brown House, Berwick High student Parker Felterman will portray town founder Thomas Berwick who will guide visitors through a short program at 10 a.m. introducing other interesting people from the past as well as factoids about the town’s history, said Toni Fangue, a member of the committee organizing the event.
Various displays at the Brown House will showcase old homes, churches, buildings, other historic pictures and an entire room honoring the 10th anniversary of Lighthouse Park.
The oldest residents of the town will be honored, and the town’s antique fire truck “Betty G” will be on display as firefighters re-enact an old-time bucket brigade.
The U.S. Coast Guard will be on hand for the 10-year anniversary of Lighthouse Park that will take place after the presentations at the Brown House.
Southwest Reef Lighthouse was erected in 1859 and served mariners since before the Civil War, guiding them along the Louisiana Coastline and up the Atchafalaya River. The town is attempting to retrieve the Ship Shoal Lighthouse and make it part of the Everett S. Berry Memorial Lighthouse Park on the riverfront.
Also planned in the vicinity are live music and food booths and visitors of the celebration will be able to take a self-guided tour of featured 100-year-old properties, Fangue said.
Residents planning to attend are asked to bring their lawn chairs. The Brown House Museum is located at 3326 Third St., in Berwick.
