EF-1 tornado, 115 mph winds, hit near Baldwin

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The National Weather Service says at least eight tornadoes hit Louisiana Tuesday, including four EF-2 tornadoes that were responsible for the extreme damage in Convent and LaPlace, along with an EF-2 in Livingston Parish and one in Paincourtville.
The tornado near Baldwin was categorized as an EF-1 with estimated peak winds at 110 mph and 50 yards in width.
The twister reportedly touched down in a sugar cane field near US 90 and was on the ground for 2.6 miles before it dissipated in another sugar cane field near La. 87. Two businesses and 28 homes were damaged, one restaurant lost most of its flat metal roof, several mobile homes lost most of their metal, roofs and a few homes were knocked off their pilings. Other homes had windows and sheet metal damage...as well as garages and carports. Many trees were snapped and at least 20 telephone/power poles were snapped as well.
Meteorologist Fred Zeigler tells The Associated Press the tornado that destroyed a Convent trailer park and killed two people was an EF-2 tornado, with winds of 111-135 mph. Other EF-2 tornadoes were confirmed in Livingston, Paintcourtville, and the one in LaPlace, which destroyed or badly damaged at least 200 homes in several subdivisions.
The four other tornadoes were an EF-0, with winds of 65-85 mph. They were in Lacombe, Kenner, Montpelier and Prairieville.
