Fire on 2nd St. battled

A fire caused considerable damage to the old Domino’s Grocery structure on Second Street Wednesday.
Franklin Fire Chief Chuck Bourgeois reported that a call came in at 4:36 p.m. Franklin responded with three units and 15 fire fighters on the scene, with aid from Baldwin, Chitimacha, Centerville and Dist. 11 personnel.
The fire began in a bedroom and spread into the attic, where it was contained.
There was significant heat and water damage throughout, with an estimated $30,000 damage to the structure and $15,000 to contents.
Bourgeois said an investigation is underway but the fire was probably accidental. No one was at home at the time. Occupants were Iris Beverly and her children.
The American Red Cross and United Way of South Louisiana St. Mary Emergency aid were contacted. Donations can be made to Emergency Aid.
The owner of the property had recently installed smoke detectors as per the law, and though no one was home, the detectors did operate properly, Bourgeois said.
Anyone who lives in a rental and the landlord has not installed smoke detectors is urged to call the landlord or FFD.
