Franklin council hires firm to design governors’ archive

Architectural firm Jahncke & Burns has been hired to design the governors’ archive to be established on the third floor of Franklin City Hall.
On recommendation of the archive’s advisory committee, the city council approved the firm’s hiring Tuesday.
Davis Jahncke and Sherri Feemster of the firm based out of New Orleans were on hand. Jahncke said, “We’re here to talk about the third floor for the archives,” he said. “The building up there is in good shape, it’s very heavy construction… you already have elevator service going up there.”
He said the company has performed similar jobs and much restoration work.
“This is what we’re used to doing,” Jahncke said.
Mayor Raymond Harris said the committee’s recommendation held a lot of weight with him and trusted their judgment.
Also Tuesday, councilmembers complained about Progressive Waste garbage collection trucks spilling foul-smelling liquid throughout the city, a long-time complaint against the collection provider.
The council had taken the company to task several times in the past and did eventually see an improvement in service, but some councilmembers noted a diminishing of that improvement.
A representative of the company will be asked to appear before the council at the August meeting.
In other business:
—Alpha of Charisma organization requested $2,000 for a repeat of last year’s back-to-school initiative to provide haircuts and school supplies for students when the semester begins. It is set for Aug. 4 at 7 a.m. at Broussard-Harris Recreation Center. Registration must be made before 9 a.m. Donations are accepted by the public. The council adopted a resolution approving a contribution not to exceed $2,000.
—Alfreida Edwards announced that National Night Out will be held Aug. 5 at 6 p.m. at Pecot Park. The annual event is “designed to strengthen our communities by encouraging neighborhoods to engage in stronger relationships with each other and with their local law enforcement partners” among other goals.
—An ordinance was introduced reducing the speed limit on Augustine Maze Street to 15 mph.
—An ordinance was adopted regulating canvassers, solicitors and peddlers.
